Christa Faust is the author of eleven novels, including the Edgar and Anthony award nominated MONEY SHOT, CHOKE HOLD, and HOODTOWN, as well as the Scribe award winning novelization of SNAKES ON A PLANE and hardboiled lesbian P.I. series BUTCH FATALE: DYKE DICK.

She grew up in New York City, in the Bronx and Hell’s Kitchen. She’s been making stuff up her whole life, and spent most of her teen years on endless subway rides, cutting school and scribbling stories.

After High School finally had enough of her, she worked in the Times Square peep booths and later as a fetish model and professional Dominatrix.

She sold her first short story when she moved to Los Angeles in the early 90s. After nearly 20 years in her beloved adopted city, she still considers herself an expat rather than a native.

She’s an avid reader and collector of vintage paperbacks, a Film Noir enthusiast and a Tattooed Lady. She writes primarily Hardboiled crime fiction, but also does work-for-hire media tie in novels.

She lives in Porn Valley with too many shoes and her Boston Terrier Butch.

My Thoughts: I finished the Micky Knight mysteries in enough time to leave me time to read one more book this weekend, so I thought what the heck, make it a dyke dick theme weekend!

So, umm, wow - if you are in the least bothered by lesbianism, you might want to skip this one, because there are some rather *ahem* explicit scenes in it. If that doesn't bother you, then go for it! The plot is fast-paced and the twists and turns just keep on coming, the plot as curvy as the women that Butch seduces in the course of the book. Faust does a great job of creating memorable characters, taking the time to give them each a personality and individual voice, while layering on the plot elements fast and furious. I really enjoyed reading this book and if it sounds like your sort of book, definitely check it out. Apparently there is a sequel in the works, and I'll be looking forward to picking it up once it comes out.

wonderful noir mystery

I read the first chapter of this book on a website, and it made me decide to give the entire thing a chance. I'm glad I did. As a fan of hard-boiled detective novels, I'd say this qualifies as 'medium-boiled', as it has a good amount of humor and sex. That was fine by me. The book reminds me of the Dave Brandstetter series, which turned assumptions about gay men on their heads. This does the same by providing an eminently likable lesbian private detective who is a skirt-chaser par excellence. The mystery isn't too heavy duty, but it's good enough and reasonably novel.

Is the mystery somewhat implausible? Yes. And the story in The Big Sleep was pretty implausible, too. However, there are enough twists and turns to be entertaining, and I liked the names, many of which were shootouts to 50s dyke fiction characters.

I recommended this book to my boyfriend, and I'll see if he'll write a review also. I can't wait to read more novels from Crista Faust, especially if they involve Butch and her lovely receptionist.

The dialogue is unique, witty, sexy (deepening on your take) and totally engaging.

I highlighted many, many lines, that either made me laugh or simply enamoured me to Butch! She might be an unapologetic player, but she's also a gentleman (her words)

There's so much to like about the plot, I don't even know where to start, so I'll end by saying just read it! I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Right now, I'm racing off to peruse this authors other books.

Wow. I had no idea what to expect, but this was a wild ride with a completely new take on the classic PI story. You get the drift really early on with a setup that will either knock your socks off or turn some people away. Those people are narrow minded squares who don't know a great detective yarn when they see one. This has violence, sex, mystery, intrigue - everything you want from a dyke dick.

Loyal readers know Christa Faust has an enduring love and respect for pulp fiction and she has created both a loving tribute and a gritty-but-fun update for the 21st century in her dyke PI Butch Fatale. The tropes are classic but it's Christa's wonderful skill and wit which breathes life into their forms and makes them just as vital and gripping even to a largely-jaded modern audience. Butch is tough and smart but also eminently aware of her weaknesses - like a luscious dame who likely means trouble - and therefore wholly human and worth rooting for. All of the characters - even the most peripheral - are compelling, the dialog is pitch-perfect, and the action never stops. Much like with Hoodtown and the Angel Dare books, it is a world I want to return to again and again and I hope Butch has the opportunity for many more scrapes, scraps, and raunchy interludes with the lovely ladies of the mean streets of L.A.

I got this book and expected a spoof of the noir/crime genre because of other reviewers calling it so on different websites. I never would have expected to be sunk into my couch, wide-eyed and heart pumping from the action and the intrigue of this incredible book. Despite the book's playful self-awareness of what it is, the characters are memorable, the action was exciting (and laugh-out-loud funny, especially towards the end of the book), and the investigation flows nicely from one plot point to another until the satisfying end.

It's almost criminal this book is only $3, but it's the best $3 I've spent in a long time.

Storywise, it's fairly predictable in the sense of offering no out-of-the-box surprises, but as exercise in the storytelling it offers a high-proof kick.

Highly recommended as a fun detective yarn wrapped around a cutely engaging piece of lesbian erotica.

It's not that long ago that I read Faust's other novel, Hoodtown, and I although I didn't know what to expect I was looking forward to reading Butch Fatale.

Butch is a Private Investigator and promiscuous lesbian, called in to investigate the disappearance of a prostitute. Along the way she has a number of sexual encounters with various women, a run in with some Armenian gangsters and constant difficulties with her old but trusty car! As you'd expect from a Faust novel, this is good quality, well-written pulp; it has drama, tension, a good dose of humour and a strong story at its heart. I really enjoyed it (I was laughing out loud during the final scenes) and I really hope this is the first in a series.

As a word of warning, this book does contain a good deal of graphic sex, so it might not be one to lend to your granny. Then again, maybe you should! ;)
