By Michael Butts HALL OF FAMEVINE VOICE on September 14, 2005
Format: DVD
THE BUTCHER'S WIFE was critically reviled in its release; star Demi Moore was even given the dubious honor of being nominated for a Razzy award for her performance in this and NOTHING BUT TROUBLE. But I liked the movie. It's charming simplicity and romantic themes are contrived and hardly original, but they're done with such unabashed sentimentality, you can't help but get moony-eyed too. Moore plays a clairvoyant somewhat naive Southern girl who decides butcher George Dzunda is the man of her dreams, and she proposes to him and he whisks her off to his butcher shop in Manhattan. There she uses her beguiling witchery to drastically alter the lives of the people she encounters: Jeff Daniels, a stuffy psychiatrist who sees Moore as a threat to his psychological world; Frances McDormand as a closet lesbian who decides to go with her feelings and admit her attraction to Margaret Colin, who just happens to be Daniels' squeeze. Moore also gives stuffy choral director Mary Steenburgen the confidence to pursue her secret desire of a career as a blues singer (Steenburgen does her own singing and she's quite effective). All of the confusion eventually works its way out and the appropriate couples find love after all. The movie is practically stolen by Steenburgen, whose performance is simply marvelous. The rest of the cast, particularly Max Perlich as a troubled teen and Colin and McDormand are fabulous. It certainly isn't a classic movie, but it's warmheartedness and glowing performances made it extremely enjoyable to this viewer.

A fairytale story where mismatched people find their way to their proper mates at the end. A feel good movie that leaves you smiling and there's nothing wrong with that. Excellent performances by everyone.

I don't pay attention to movie critics. Who can tell what I might like in a movie? Only one person counts: Me. So if you want a critical review of the movie, the acting, photography, etc., read some one else. I can tell you it is a miserable day weather wise here, I felt very low, and I watched this movie. I have seldom enjoyed a movie so much, laughed so hard, and gained insight while doing it. That is all worth while I can say abput this except to urge you to see it.

This was a cute mix of reality and fantasy, with a moral of no matter what you use to rule your life, fate has a plan for you. Demi Moore plays Marina, a naive southern girl with a gift, who dreams her new husband (sort of) and ends up in New York married to the neighborhood Butcher (George Dzundza)! Jeff Daniels is the non-commital psychiatrist across the street and Mary Steenbergen is a mild-mannered church chior director who wants to sing in a Lounge. Between the four of them, they turn their lives upside-down and all around, affecting the lives of all those around them. It's a chick flick and very good!

The Butcher's Wife may not be truly great film making, but it certainly is a lot of fun! George Dzundza is delightful as Leo Lemke, a butcher from New York City who goes on vacation and brings home Demi Moore as his bride. Soon, she has most of the neighborhood wrapped around her little finger with her beauty and gift for knowing things about their future. However, the one person she irritates is the psychologist across the street, played by Jeff Daniels. It's a sweet, funny feelgood film.

This is the worst sort of 'Chick Flick': pure sap romantic 'comedy' with the characters running around acting like hormone crazed high school freshmen with their first crush. Demi Moore was nominated for a Razzie for her role in this movie for good reason: her Southern accent is horrible and she slips in and out of it several times in each scene, often more than once in a sentence, and her acting in this movie is just plain bad. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast is little better. But we can't put all of the blame on the actors in this movie, the writing is on a par with something you'd find on Fanfiction.net by a 12 year old girl writing out her idea of a perfect romance. Our heroine sweeps a complete stranger off his feet, marries him and is taken to the Big City, where everyone loves her and the cutest guy in the neighborhood, an established psychiatrist, tosses over the tenets of his profession and his live-in girlfriend for her. Our heroine's husband doesn't mind because he falls for the nightclub singer, who was persuaded to sing by our heroine. The psychiatrist's girlfriend doesn't mind because she suddenly finds out that she's a lesbian, though she never knew it, and falls for her former boyfriend's female best friend, who she has known for years.

In other words, this movie is just plain bad all the way around. I'm glad I watched it on Amazon Prime and didn't have to rent it, but it was a complete waste of my time.

I finally decided I wanted to own this movie, and ordered it before the Xmas rush. It is fun, funny, a great escape, and never a disappointment. Jeff Daniels is great as a beleaguered psychiatrist whose life and practice begin to unravel in the wake of the new arrival in the neighborhood, the butcher's wife, who happens to be a clairvoyant. Demi Moore plays this part so convincingly I find myself wishing she'd move into my neighborhood!
