Now, after having received this kit and seeing the videos, I was not the least bit disappointed. Patrick as a teacher has an approachable, likeable demeanor, yet is confident in his material, and obviously very knowledgeable about his topic. He (thankfully) is not one of these super-polished characters that you usually find with internet video purchases these days. He is "real" and it comes across very well in his DVD. He has an irish accent, but it was very easy to follow what he was saying at all times.
I was able to pick up, within one watching, the source of what I was doing wrong, and now I'm able to do it beautifully now, with his pointers. I could tell you here where it is that I was going wrong, but I think that experiencing one of his trainings (on the video), and hearing him emphasize the important parts over and over, is probably the best thing that a person can do if they really want to learn how to do this breathing.
The only thing I did not like about this recording was the panning of the small audience, which contained a younger boy who was obviously bored--it was distracting because I was very interested in everything Patrick had to say.
I also had a brief email exchange with his Buteyko Clinic, and they were very helpful, caring, and professional.
I am having good results with slowing my breathing, most notably, a dramatic elimination of night-time heart pounding, and increased daytime energy. I was also able to keep my nose clear during a recent flu, and keep my symptoms very very mild and manageable. I've been sharing a bit of this with my 9-year old who has been having a chronic cough at night time, and this has been helping her calm the cough. She also says it helps her feel sleepy (which is a high-five, because she always complains of not being able to fall asleep!). I, too, have a hard time falling asleep often (especially in the middle of the night), and the nose-clearing technique helps me feel drowsy faster and stronger than anything else I've tried (and certainly faster than any medicine would!).
I've been finding that the different techniques are very easy to work into my regular daily life. Whenever I am taking a walk outside, I can do the stepping exercises (breath-holding while walking), during driving I do breath-holds, and every night I do the nose-clearing technique to get me drowsy whenever I'm having trouble falling asleep (which is often).
Of course, he is also saying that you should do 1 hour of formal exercise every day to gain the real benefits--20 min in the morning, 20 min at lunch, and 20 min in evening. I have not gotten to this yet [I have been using a frolov-type device 2-3 times a day as a way to break myself in to Buteyko breathing], but with these great benefits so far, I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do when I really apply myself.
I'd say this was one of the best $30 I've ever spent. I am so grateful that this is available for people who want to learn to do it themselves without having a personal tutor, as is being suggested throughout the internet regarding Buteyko breathing.
The book could use a little editing and formatting (like many self published books), but I will not take off any stars so others will not be put off. The DVD is a nice compliment to the book and it is good to refer back to them as you are starting out so it reinforces what/how to do the exercises. Patrick gives an outline of what various levels of relief you'll reach when your breath hold timing reaches certain points and where you have to be in order to be asthma free all the time.
Asthmatics may fear using a method that involves holding your breath - this feeling is fleeting as the breathing improvement quickly kicks in. Breathing through your nose and breath holds are the essence of the exercises. If your nose is stuffed up, an exercise to clear it is included. Shortly after starting breathing through my nose, I found my nose no longer got stuffy.
I'd like to thank the late Dr. Buteyko and Patrick McKeown for bringing relief to asthmatics!
The Buteyko method is named after its founder Doctor Konstantin Buteyko. It is the most effective drug-free approach for the management of asthma and other breathing related problems. It can be practiced by both adults and children, and gives quick and consistent results.
The Buteyko method is neither a medical treatment nor procedure. It does not involve any medication, homeopathy or herbs. It is series of lectures related to breathing which enables people to understand a concept of 'normal breathing' or breathing according to physiological norms. It contains simple breathing techniques and logical instructions to follow. It also gives the means of controlling breathing parameters without any technical appliances. Buteyko method brings the physiological parameters of the body to the norm. It can be easily incorporated into the daily life of any contemporary person. It does not require you to interrupt your everyday activities to perform any sophisticated procedures similar to yogi's 'asana'. You can use the concept of the method at any time in any situation.
The success of the Buteyko method in the treatment of asthma is backed by hard scientific data. Clinical trials funded by the Australian Association of Asthma Foundations in 1994 at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane demonstrated that asthmatics were able to reduce their symptomatic medication intake by 90% and their steroid medication by 30%. This reduction in medication was accompanied by improvements in their general health and quality of life.

I also purchased The Oxygen Advantage, which looks at increasing athletic performance, as well as respiratory, and weight issues, using some of these same breathing exercises. See my review.
Patrick McKeown's book, DVD and CD provide a comprehensive and thorough look at Buteyko Breathing Techniques and lifestyle strategies in a way that is easy to understand, logical and medically sound, and above all very reassuring. The author is also available to contact for advice free of charge if you have any concerns or questions.
Many Buteyko courses are very expensive, but this book, DVD, CD and email help combination really does provide a fantastic foundation to learn Buteyko and master the basics.
There are many types of breathing retraining strategies out there, I have personally found this one very useful and affordable. Give it a shot!
