Update: After reading other reviews I checked and mine is also not the model pictured, but an older model. With Thanksgiving being next week at this point I'm sticking with it and waiting on instructions, but I would look elsewhere if you are set on this particular model.
Cleanup involves letting the oil cool off quite a bit then draining via the spout back into the jugs from whence it came, pull the reservoir out of the unit once the oil gets low enough and then tip it up to drain the rest out of the spout. The oil that doesn't go out the spout is pretty dirty anyway so that gets wiped out with paper towels and thrown away. Wipe the rest of the hopper and fill with hot soapy water and rinse a few times and mine was ready to get put back in the box (we're military so we keep the original boxes quite often as it saves trying to stuff items in packing boxes every few years).
This IS a very good deep fryer and works very well.
The 1 star rating is for those who wish to read about flaws. (primarily the mfg)
NOTE: I have had spectacular results using this deep fryer for "many" things.
The internal basket is unbalanced due to the addition of drain clips on one side.
Doesn't sound like a problem, but it is a major flaw.
The flaw will not allow the user to lower the basket in without it getting caught on the sides EVERY TIME so much that the basket will not go in.
The same is true although not as bad when pulling the basket out.
Do be daft.... if the basket is very full this weight unbalance has very little effect.
However, if frying smaller items, this unbalance is a major problem requiring two hands to manage. (a constant burn hazard)
I solved this problem by installing a stainless steel counterweight inside the basket. ($6)
DETAIL I used a 3 inch long piece of 3/4 inch 304 stainless steel as a counterweight attached through an existing basket hole with a stainless steel screw. The piece weighs 6.7 ounces. The piece does not rust or corrode and is easily removable using only one small 1/2 inch long #8-32 flat head screw. (drilling the stainless steel was easy, tapping it was not, stainless steel is hard to tap) The piece could also be held in place with stainless steel wire if desired.
This design flaw MUST be fixed, it causes malfunction.
It is an easy and inexpensive fix.
The brightness of the heat/ready lamps is too dim for any use outside.
Easy design fix that is needed.
The timer display cannot be used outside.
Minor design flaw, debatable if needed.
1. A screw-on drain spout with built in cleanable catch filter.
2. A ceramic coated non stick fry basket.
