Review

"This beautifully written story will transport you and your little ones into a magical world of butterflies, forest creatures, and lovely gardens. Not only is the story immediately engaging, but it is also educational as well." --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

About the Author

Nancy Lorraine brings her knowledge of children's developmental issues to her stories. She has a Ph.D. in Social Work and has counseled families and children in crisis for over 32 years. After retiring, Nancy Lorraine rediscovered the transformative power of nature and renewed her dedication to its conservation. Using her knowledge as a master gardener, Nancy Lorraine worked to certify her coastal town as a wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation and helped to establish a Habitat nature park for her community. Nancy currently spends her spare time writing and tending to her backyard garden, a tranquil refuge frequented by butterflies and grandchildren. Dorothy Herron painted the beautiful watercolor illustrations for The Butterfly Adventure. She incorporates her love of nature in all her art. The watercolors in the book are available as art prints.

I have nothing but good things to say about "The Butterfly Adventure." This beautifully written story, with its lyrical prose, will transport you and your little ones into a magical world of butterflies, forest creatures and lovely gardens. Not only is the story immediately engaging, but it is also educational as well. I like the fact that there are 4 chapters, so that, at least for the younger readers, the book can be read over several sittings. And the illustrations are absolutely stunning. What a breath of fresh air!

The book is a wonderful, exciting adventure that will definitely keep a child's attention even when you read it over and over again! The balance of pictures and description was just right, and the watercolor illustrations are quite beautiful. I could definitely see a teacher or parent using the book to teach about different types of butterflies, insects, animals, and even flowers! Plus, there's the themes of friendship and helping each other find the way home. It would even be fun to make little art projects inspired by the story! The book is also broken into short chapters that provide a nice stopping point in the tale, which is perfect for keeping a child longing for more until the next night...

My two children love this tale of friendship and adventure in the garden. We live in the city but have a small garden patch in our backyard, designed mostly to attract butterflies. My two kids, ages 2 and 6, love to imagine being one of the little creatures we find in our backyard. The Butterfly Adventure transports them completely with its vibrant watercolors and prose. My 2 year old son is typically not one to sit still very long for books unless they are about cars, trains, or superheros but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was one book that captivated not only his older sister but my little guy. They both absolutely loved it and now The Butterfly Adventure is a bedtime favorite!

The Butterfly Adventure is a beautiful way to introduce young children to the wonders of nature, most specifically, in the backyard garden. The lovely bond between the grandparent and child serves as an example of what love within a family should be. Giving the creatures in the garden human emotions and personalities is another feature of this book which may help children (and adults) view all nature in a more imaginative way. We look forward to more butterfly adventures.

My husband ordered this book for me, and I love it. Being a retired elementary teacher, I can see so many uses for it in the classroom. The book presents excellent information for children to learn more about butterflies, and other insects. The illustrations are so captivating that I know the children would want to create their own. The book is a wonderful tool for science and research lessons and I wish I were back in the classroom to share it with students. The Butterfly Adventure by Nancy Lorraine is a true gift for the elementary classroom.
