About the Author

Tanya Wright recurs in the role of "Kenya" on the popular HBO series, True Blood. A native of the Bronx, NY, she attended George School in Pennsylvania and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College before working at the New York Times. After participating in the prestigious Williamstown Theatre Festival, she relocated to LA to pursue an acting career, quickly gaining momentum on the small screen with roles on critically acclaimed television shows like 24, NYPD BLUE, and ER. While in front of the camera, Tanya continued to write. She was a semi-finalist in AMPAS' Nicholl Screenwriting Competition and a fellow at the Mark Taper Blacksmyth's Playwriting Lab. Tanya is also the writer/creator of several screenplays, television shows, and web-based series. Butterfly Rising, the film of her screenplay, marks her directorial debut. She enjoys dance, yoga, mentoring, and playing fetch with her black Labrador, Macarena (like the dance!), who plays "Baby Girl" in the movie.

I don't get it? I've managed to get through the first 75 pages and I just can't find any motivation to go any further. The characters are so pitiful and simple, the story so thin. Somebody please tell me why I should keep on going.

Finding time in my busy schedules to find a Great book and a Good cup of coffee is hard to do these days. But, I found one book that just did that for me.(Still have not found the coffee!) Butterfly Rising is a must read for anyone who appreciates the complexity of life, who understands that what lies within a person is much more profound than their visual exterior. While Lilah and Rose are the main characters, each of the supporting characters also have a story to tell. The author, Tanya Wright, did a great job of making the characters more important than the time period. The story flows, not in the format of days and weeks, but anchored in each character's development and progression. The relationship between Lilah and Rose, Ruthie and Henry, Honey Chile and Pop-Pop is identifiable and real. Out of fear of giving away the story, I will close by saying READ THIS BOOK; if you enjoy lively characters whose personalities jump off the page, with a touch of mysticism, you won't be disappointed.

I read the first couple of chapters in this book only. The story just didn't grab me the way I thought it would. There were many positive reviews that encouraged me to buy this book but I cannot give that same encouragement to other buyers. Sorry. Not my cup of tea.

I thought the book was quite interesting. I like the way the characters all intertwined together and it was like the life cycle of a butterfly. The book had some sad parts as well as happiness. Tanya touched on the "gift" as well as the sixth sense. True friendship is hard to find and Rose and Lilah were truly friends.

This book was in desperate need of editing. It took too long to get to the heart of the story, but when you do (if you do), the story picks up and flows. Unfortunately, there were just too many errors and unnecessary passages. With some editing this could be a good book.

Tanya Wright's passion for writing is clearly evident in her debut novel, Butterfly Rising. It was a well-written story with vivid settings in certain chapters. At times, I felt like I was watching a film or stage play. I loved the friendship that was created by Lilah and Rose, two unexpected characters who were complete opposites, but had more in common as they discovered during their journey from Lucasville to Newhope to beyond. Their character development was amazing and I could empathize with their experiences: dealing with heartache when someone doesn't love you back; grieving over the loss of a loved one; finding true love in unexpected places; and, most importantly, pursuing your passion to accomplish your dreams. Butterfly Rising is a great summer read and I purchased a copy for a dear friend to hopefully inspire her to pursue her creative endeavors. I'm looking forward to reading more from Tanya because this is only the beginning for this talented author.

Lazarus, the Butterflies, the pain, the joy of sweet release....what a wonderful undertaking in this well written book. The story unfolds delicately but with poise and fever all at the same time. There are undeniable spiritual undertones, and yet laced with human drama and indecision. At the end of the day...so as not to give away the story, it was a book that I just had to keep reading in every free moment...until I reached the end. I highly recommend this book, albeit a novel, for anyone who has experienced pain and indecision, anyone seeking liberty from some crisis in their life. I was entertained, but made to think at the same time! While I may not be a literary scholar--and the average Jane and Joe isn't--I just love a great book to escape with even one I have to wrestle away from my wife to read first when I bring it home. Great job Ms. Wright! Well done!!
