Compared to a $300+ professional Butterfly made in Japan, I had no problem adjusting to and playing against someone with the more expensive one. It lacks the cushion the more expensive one has, so technically you'd have to put more strength to get the ball to move as far, but in practice, you don't even feel it. I'd think that once you get into more advanced techniques the differences would matter more... but since I ain't trying to be a pro, it's totally fine with me! Highly recommended to anyone who's playing recreationally!
The paddle is heavier than what I am used to but over time I'm getting more accustomed to it. It seemed like whatever I knew before about the game had to be thrown out due to the number of adjustments I have had to make. For me, the ball really flies off the paddle, even when no force is used. It really comes down to how the paddle is held; just a few degrees make a distance. I'm still learning.
The spin is very good and much better than what I was used to so that definitely helps. No complaints there really. As far as control, I think once I get used to the weight and how to control returns more, then it will feel like it deserves its rating.
As stated before, if you're looking for a very good paddle and not break the bank, then give this paddle a shot. Just be prepared to make some adjustments if you're upgrading from a low-level paddle.
Updated after 1 year...
This is my favorite pre-assembled racket so far. I play at most once a week and the rubber and blade is holding up very well, not much difference when it was new.
The spin is decent, but it can't compare with custom rubbers.
The speed is average, but it's enough for me to work with, for now.
The feel and control is great. I have a better feel of the ball at contact. It must be the blade.
I also purchased a Donic Waldner 900 for double the money, $60. I don't like it at all.
The spin and speed is about the same as the Butterfly 401, but the feel and control is not as good.
The racket came in a day earlier than expected and I was pleasantly surprised. The racket uses Butterfly Yuki rubber onboth sides. My Senshu racket uses Flextra rubber and the Yuki rubber on this racket feels as sticky, though not quite a powerful as the flextra. The tape on the side of the racket is a very nicenylon ribbon material and it gives the racket a classy look. In play, the racket is ver well balanced with great spin and control, making this an ideal racket for the intermediate player. It also has 2.1 mm rubber which gives it a little extra "oomph" on slams.
Overall, I am very hapy with this racket, while not as fast as my Senshu, it is half the price of that racket and has 9/10's the performance.
