A good book for hearing impaired children, although dated...

It can be difficult for young children to feel comfortable about using special equipment, especially when that equipment is uncommon and (therefore) noticeable by peers. This book does a reasonable job of helping children to feel more comfortable using hearing aid equipment. The equipment highlighted is quite dated and cumbersome compared to today's equipment. However, the universal feelings expressed in the book are quite appropriate for a modern child facing the prospect of using hearing aids.

Really cute book with a good story. It was published in 1976 so the hearing aid is not a behind the ear device it's a box held in a harness on her chest. My five year old was confused by that, but otherwise loved the fact that the girl had a hearing aid just like him. (He laughed pretty hard when she explains that she can turn the hearing aid off and not hear her friend when she wants to. He figured that out when he was 2!) The book also looked much brighter in the pictures, the copy I got is faded and the pages feel thin.

My 4-year old daughter is hard of hearing and is getting 2 hearing aids. This was a good book to help explain hearing aids to her and to the other children in her class. It's a little outdated due to the type of equipment described, but the concepts are the same. At 4 years old, I think it's more important to explain the concept than the equipment...

I have a job working with children with special needs, so I am always on the lookout for good children's books that can be used in the classroom to introduce peers to specific exceptionalities. In my opinion, this book is dated and not particularly well written or engaging. I bought the book used and didn't hang onto it very long before getting rid of it.

As a young woman who grew up with hearing aids, I wish I had a book like this to tell me that I wasn't the only child with hearing aids. I highly recommend educators to have this book in their classroom. I also recommend Living With Deafness by Emma Haughton to support this narrative.
