Fabric: This is 100% Supima cotton. If you're not familiar with Supima, it's an American cotton growers' association which sets high standards for picking and processing, and is arguably the best cotton in the world. This is the marketing Amazon uses to push the "American-sourced" messaging, ignoring that the cotton is then processed, dyed, and manufactured in Indonesia. But let's be real, most men's shirts are made overseas, especially in this price range.
This shirt has a soft, breathable weave that is not quite a true non-iron (that usually involves a rayon or polyester blend, or coating the cotton with petroleum), but is pretty wrinkle-resistant. It's very comparable to the fabrications of more expensive shirts from brands like J.Crew, Banana Republic, and Pierre Cardin. The care tag is explicit not to dry clean it, so I assume it uses some pigment dyes, which are fine to launder but will turn pinky-orange in the chemicals used to dry clean. Most importantly, the pattern is aligned across all seams giving it a handsome, elevated look.
Fit: Here's where I start to nit-pick. Of course every men's shirt should be taken and tailored, but assuming you want to wear it out-of-the-box, here's what that looks like. This shirt has a flawless shoulder fit, which is where most other brands struggle. Then the rest is a bit off. While the item description purports a slim fit, the arms and chest have at least 1/2" of excess fabric to be a true slim (again, spend the $8 and tailor it). The length is at least a full 1" longer than my preference (I'm 6' and the tails hang well below the rise).
The last part is important in determining how you'll wear this shirt. While it has a near-identical raw cut to my dress Michael Kors and Pierre Cardin shirts, the length and steep pitch of the lowers is too long to really wear hanging out. Well, ...to wear hanging out and look fashionable. It's perfect for tucking in and securing a hold for a semi-casual to dressy look (see my attached pics). If you normally wear your shirt untucked, definitely consider flattening the seamline of the lowers and pulling them up to mid-crotch.
The last details on my list are that the button holes are about 1/16" too open, which within a few months will start to result in buttons slipping undone. The spread collar is very at home open, but closed is a good 1/8" offset from a true close. On most designer shirts, the buttons carry a branding either on the front or side and are color-set to the shirt, while this shirt uses generic white buttons. This is handy if you ever need to replace one, but doesn't have quite the finished look of its designer counterparts.
In all, this is an impressive shirt at a good price. A few tweaks in the next cutting and this will move to a five-star design; for now it's a solid four.
+ Quality (for the price): 5 stars. The cotton is soft, comfortable, and feels like it will last. The stitching and button holes are clean, the buttons are fairly thick and sewn tightly, the collar seems well-fused and stands up nicely (includes plastic collar stays), and I haven't noticed any flaws. Maybe a couple stray threads that needed trimming, but very minor and completely forgiven considering the price.
+ Style/fit: 3.5 stars. The 14.5" neck measures about 14.75", which is perfect for me, and the shoulder width is also perfect at ~17.5". The chest is just a tad narrow (I'm 38", the size chart indicates 36", but I like close-fitting shirts), but will probably be perfect for most buyers of the 14.5" size with a 36-37" chest. Unfortunately even in this 'fitted' style there's too much material around the waist -- 3-4" more than necessary for me. I realize I'm pretty thin, but so are many people with a 14.5" neck size! On the bright side, there is less excess material than most other brands of fitted/slim fit shirts I've tried. Finally, the 34" sleeves shrunk down to around 33.5", which is a bummer since I'm closer to 34.25". I've pleaded with Amazon to ask the manufacturer to make a 14.5"/35" option, but I'm not holding out hope that it will ever happen.
+ Value: 5 stars. I paid well under 1/2 price on sale, and I consider that to be a screaming bargain. At full price I'd probably shop the competition a bit more, or save up for a made-to-measure shirt for about twice the retail price of this shirt.
Overall it's a fantastic bargain for a quality shirt at the discounted price I paid. I've now bought five of the Buttoned Down dress shirts and sport shirts and I wear them all frequently. I highly recommend them, especially if a size/pattern you're interested in is on sale.
