Editorial Reviews

Review

"If Jim Benton had written this blurb, it would have been more shorter, smarter, and would have contained a salient observation on human nature." - Zach Weinersmith, Cartoonist, SMBC-comics.com

"Essentially, if you or your recipient like books that make you want to photograph and tweet every page, you should buy this. The beautifully-named 'Dog Butts and Love. And Stuff Like That. And Cats.' is available in paperback or Kindle at Amazon UK, but we'd argue this is one of those books you want in the flesh." - Holly Brockwell, Gadgette.com

"Jim Benton is an amazing artist and writer, who has for years graced the internet with his hilarious and sometimes poignant comics. His clever humour has sparked thousands of conversations on our site, and for the past four years he has engaged the reddit community with wit and charm alike. Jim's comics are beloved highlights in a sea of billions of posts we see on reddit, and he has consistently managed to stand out, making us (and many others) laugh nearly every day."
-Alex Angel, Community Manager, reddit.com

"...Eventually I peeked over her shoulder, and started laughing, too. Eventually we went through the whole book together, front to back.
It was marvelously entertaining, because Benton is obviously insane, or insanely creative. Not two gags were very much alike, and tone and subject matter ranged from light-hearted "The Far Side" kind of stuff, to the black humor of Charles Addams' "The Addams Family," and everywhere in between.
"Dog Butts" turned out to be genuinely original and very entertaining, which was a welcome surprise." -Andrew A. Smith, Chicago Tribune

"...there are also lots of gags about death, particularly murder, and breasts. The former points to a pleasing dark edge that runs through Benton's cartoons and gives them some heft, while the latter at least shows his comedy is unfiltered.  The gags...are tricked out with ironic twists and surrealist humor....Benton is best-known as a one-man children's franchise blockbuster, having created the kids' series The Dumb Diaries, It's Happy Bunny, and more. His name is still not quite household-level, but this collection might open up offline readers to his adult material." -- Publishers Weekly

"To have a collection of his best works available in one collection is a huge victory for humanity, for he has a talent for illustrating some truly laugh out loud stuff that tickles everyone's funny bones. The fact he doesn't rely on one style of illustration keeps things fresh, and makes him a chameleon in comics.

No too simple and not too raunchy, Benton walks that fine line of humor successfully and makes the reader enjoy laughing. I had many good, hearty laughs throughout." -- BleedingCool.com

"Consistently brilliant, always hilarious, Jim Benton is one of the best cartoonists on the web right now."  — Matthew Inman, TheOatmeal.com

"If laughter is the best medicine, then your insurance company should reimburse you for the cost of this book."  —Jerry Zucker, director, Airplane!, Top Secret!, and other films

“It was marvelously entertaining, because Benton is obviously insane, or insanely creative. Not two gags were very much alike, and tone and subject matter ranged from light-hearted ‘The Far Side’ kind of stuff, to the black humor of Charles Addams’ ‘The Addams Family,’ and everywhere in between. ‘Dog Butts’ turned out to be genuinely original and very entertaining.” —Chicago Tribune

“Easy to pick up but hard to put down...Pick up a copy of this hilarious new book, you won’t be disappointed!” —PopCulturez.com

“Twisted, brutally honest and laugh out loud comics…this book is the perfect gift for someone who needs to lighten up! Well recommended.” —Joseph's Reviews

"Essentially, if you or your recipient like books that make you want to photograph and tweet every page, you should buy this." —Holly Brockwell, gadgette.com

I simply adore Jim Benton's collection of cartoons. The drawings are wonderful, naturally, but what sets Jim Benton's cartoons apart from everyone else's is his ability to be silly, thoughtful, absurd, and meaningful. He mines a lot of territory and is successful on all counts. These are like cartoons that you might see in The New Yorker, but much, much funnier.

Jim Benton is an astonishingly prolific genius whose work ranges from the sublime to the ridiculous, from the profane to the innocuous, and from the hilarious to... the even more hilarious. If you follow his posts on reddit, you've no doubt seen some of these cartoons... but even the most ardent fan is bound to miss one here and there. This collection will fill in those critical gaps!

Jim Benton has a terrific sense of humor. If you enjoy snarky, clever, sometimes dark, sometimes happy, and downright funny comics this is right up your alley. It's along the lines of the Oatmeal, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, Extra Fabulous Comics, Lunarbaboon, and other fantastic online comics. Jim always gets bigger laughs from me because they don't always stick to a theme and seem to attack from all angles.

I've been a reader of Jim's works for a few years now. Little did I know that the I was reading comics by the same author as Dear Dumb Diary and Happy Bunny which are both titles in my daughter collection of books. While he has found success with these previously mentioned books, I find where he really excels is in making cartoons. His sense of humor is perfect for this format, His comics range in topics from light heated fun, to the absurd, to slightly dark, and even to thought provoking. Reading Dog Butts and Love. And Stuff Like That. And Cats. takes me back to my childhood when I was first exposed to Herman by Jim Unger, or later in life when I discovered The Far Side by Gary Larson. Jim does a great job of giving us a variety of humor on various topics all packed into one book. I am really looking forward to the next one because I can't wait to add it to my collection of classic comics.

If you love great humor, fantastic illustrations and laughing, do your self a favor and pick up a copy today.
