In the spirit of The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning and The Joy of Less, experience the benefits of buying less and sharing more with this accessible 7-step guide to decluttering, saving money, and creating community from the creators of the Buy Nothing Project.

In their island community, friends Liesl Clark and Rebecca Rockefeller discovered that the beaches of Puget Sound were spoiled by a daily influx of plastic items and trash washing on shore. From pens and toothbrushes to toys and straws, they wondered, where did it all come from? Of course, it comes from
us—our homes, our backyards, our cars, and our workplaces. And so, a rallying cry against excess stuff was born.

In 2013, they launched the first Facebook Buy Nothing Project group in their small town off the coast of Seattle, and they never expected it to become a viral sensation. Today there are thousands of Buy Nothing groups all over the world, boasting more than a million members, and 5,000 highly active volunteers.

Inspired by the ancient practice of gift economies, where neighbors share and pool resources,
The Buy Nothing, Get Everything Plan introduces an environmentally conscious 7-step guide that teaches us how to buy less, give more, and live generously. At once an actionable plan and a thought-provoking exploration of our addiction to stuff, this powerful program will help you declutter your home without filling landfills, shop more thoughtfully and discerningly, and let go of the need to buy new things. Filled with helpful lists and practical suggestions including 50 items you never need to buy (Ziploc bags and paper towels) and 50 things to make instead (gift cards and salad dressing), The Buy Nothing, Get Everything Plan encourages you to rethink why you shop and embrace a space-saving, money-saving, and earth-saving mindset of buying less and sharing more.

What a wonderful and motivating concept! Gift what you’re finished using and ask your community for what you need. I joined the local Buy Nothing facebook group about 1 year ago and it has been an amazing gift to my household. We’ve been able to give a lot because we have too much. We also asked for some things - for example when my crockpot broke - I was gifted a much better one. I asked for a mortar and pestle and someone gifted me a beautiful large granite one. This is definitely a win win philosophy! The book clarifies the winning attitudes. Love it!

An excellent Guidebook for understanding the "Buy Nothing Project"
Join and give where you live; Give ~ Receive ~ Lend ~ Share and Show Gratitude in hyper-local gift economies, where the true wealth is the connections between real neighbors. I joined a neighborhood group and have found great pleasure in giving / sharing what I no longer use or need. Pass it on!

Honestly, I love all the ideas and exercises in this book. They are just....make sense. I like that this book gives sustainable lifestyle changes that are super easy to implement. Only only complaint is that I book a used book that had a huge sticker that said it was an "Advanced Copy- NOT FOR RESALE".......I think if the seller had actually read the book they would have passed it along instead of selling it.

Thought-provoking book about how we can help our environment/planet and ourselves at the same time. Now more than ever we need to connect with our neighbors and cut down on consumption. I love the backstory to how the authors were inspired to start this movement as well as the stories of other cultures and their Buy Nothing economies. It’s a must-read for everyone. Would make an excellent graduation gift.

The Buy Nothing, Get Everything Plan by Liesl Clark is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late March.

Decluttering, making-do, homemade-ing, giving back, and buying only what you truly need. It's a different way of looking at what you have in relation to pollution, recycling, and overproduction of plastic, as well as a moralistic, perhaps monastic duty.

I love the useful ideas and overall philosophy to apply to daily living.
I confess to not following every suggestion, but we should all read this and aim toward these goals to be sensitive to the earth and avoiding wastefulness.
