When the Covid vaccine was released, I knew I wanted it to protect myself and my kindergarten students, but I wasn’t sure how I’d be able to face the needle to do it. “You’ll be fine” or “it’s not that bad” or “you’ll barely even feel it” aren’t convincing when your fear is the concept and not the pain, so I kept putting it off. I thought I would wait for the nasal vaccine that’s in development. Then… my school district decided to make masks optional. None of the students at my school are old enough to be vaccinated, but are very much capable of catching/carrying the virus to myself or their peers. I felt like I was backed into a corner, so I immediately ordered a Buzzy and scheduled my first dose for the day after it would be delivered.
The buzzy mini is as described… mini. It fits in the palm of what my mom likes to call my “baby hands.” There is a hook that holds the ice pack to the bee. The ice packs are plastic, so it would be very easy to sanitize and pass to someone else to use. The button to turn it on is on the top. It has an auto shutoff feature. It’s very cute and non-threatening, which is nice when you’re in a fearful situation.
The morning of my appointment, I applied some lidocaine cream (didn’t work), took a prescribed sedative, and I brought the wings to my Buzzy in a bag filled with other ice packs to keep it frozen. After I checked in at the pharmacy, I hooked the wings on, turned the Buzzy on, and held it against my upper arm where I knew they’d be injecting me. When it was time for the shot, I slid the Buzzy up, looked away, felt a tiny pinch, and it was over. The part I was scared of - feeling the needle inside of my arm - was nonexistent. The vibrations caused by the Buzzy were enough to distract me from hyper-fixating on the jab.
I put a lot of effort into conquering my fear and getting vaccinated, but I really don’t think I could have done it without Buzzy. It isn’t a magical cure to needle fear, but it’s a wonderful distraction and pain reliever. This will absolutely be with me any time I need to have a a procedure done. I could also see it being useful in the classroom for some of the smaller boo-boos that don’t require a bandaid or the nurse.

My only gripe is that she is on her third one (and I'm writing this review just before I order her fourth) and she was diagnosed almost exactly a year ago. So, each Buzzy lasts about four months before it mysteriously dies.
Sure she's nine but she knows that these things are for a specific purpose and not to be played with so it isn"t like they are being treated rough. $10 a month for pain relief isn't going to bankrupt me but I'd like a more rugged product, seeing as how it's marketed for kids.
Still, until a better solution comes along....
Thankfully her rheumatologist has her on a good treatment plan and she takes several medications. One of the medications she needs is methotrexate which is an injection we give her here at home every Friday.
The buzzy helps so much when it comes to her weekly injections. It comes with 2 little ice packs that are shaped like wings that we put on her leg for a but before the injections and then we put the buzzy right near where the injection site is and it helps her so much.
Since we started using it, she doesn't cry anymore during the shot. She sometimes cries because of the anticipation anf anxiety of getting a shot but she immediately stops crying once the needle goes in. Because it doesn't hurt.
The buzzy vibrates at a really high intensity so I guess it helps confuse the nerves or something. Honestly though, I don't care how it works, I'm just thankful that injection days are easier now. For her and us.
100% would recommend for anyone (kid or adult) that has to deal with shots or something on a regular basis. I'd recommend it for any parent even for regular vaccine injections too, it helps that much.
