Top Customer Reviews
If you have ever held an Xbox 360 controller you should be right at home. It works and feels just like one, but there are a few minor differences that should be noted and these include:
-Smaller by about 30% to the standard controller
-No button thumb sticks
-Buttons make more noise
These are minor flaws and shouldn't change anyone's mind on buying this controller, UNLESS you have very big hands. I personally don't have big hands but after a long session of playing I did notice my hands cramped up a little bit.
The controller runs on 2 triple A batteries and after around 10 hours of grinding Minecraft, it's at about 75% battery, so no need to worry about your battery dying every time you use it.
Finally, how does it work in game? Well coming from someone who played console FPS games at a competitive level I have to say, I was very impressed for an iPhone based controller. It's not exactly the same console feel, especially when playing Modern combat games(Feels very delayed, but playable). When it came to Minecraft, I was blown away by his perfect it was. I set it up on the stand it came with(which to mention, is great. But I would like it to recline a little more than it does) and put in hours and hours of time into the game. It feels just like Minecraft of the console.
Overall this is a great controller for iPhone gaming and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a controller compatible for the IPhone or even an Andriod.
Within 3 weeks the phone holder broke. Pretty easy, I was just sliding it in and it was a little off and pushing it in one of the prongs snapped. Honestly I always feel like it was about to break anytime I was bending it back to push the phone into the holder slot. But it worked well enough. MadCatz support was great, once I got a hold of someone they were prompt to replace it. Though I did wait a bit over a week for the replacement part to arrive.
After that, I had the right trigger stop working for no apparent reason. It was pretty easy to open and it was simply that the trigger plastic and the arm that attaches to it weren't aligned. Then the same issue happened twice more.
I also had issues with the Bluetooth connection just seemed to stop working sometimes. The phone would show as connected and the controller lights worked but nothing would happen. I'd charge it, still nothing. Sometimes if I unpaired Bluetooth and re-paired it would start again but not always.
This was my 2nd of 3 iOS gamepads. My first one was startus Steel series which also had issues with being cheap and losing connection at times.
I have replaced my Mad Catz with a Moga Rebel http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/10/10/moga-rebel-ios-game-controller-review. I've had the Moga for several months and it has been great. Unfortunately Amazon doesn't sell the iOS Moga controller, note you need an MFI controller to play with iPhone/iPad, I bought mine from the Apple store website at the time.
If you're wondering what games work with iOS gamepads checkout Afterpad.com it's a great resource for a comprehensive game list as well as controller reviews and a few other iOS gamepad related articles.
- Great color
- Solid build quality
- Trusted Name
- Not great compatibility with Minecraft Pocket Edition, but is usable
- A little small for larger handed people.
On another note, the controller is a lot lighter than I imagined, but it was fine by me.
