As mentioned in other reviews this item seems decent quality and works as advertised. Unit defaults to input number one when powered on so keep that in mind when attaching your devices. I used this to connect a Sharp Blu-ray DVD and a Sony DVP multi-disc DVD player to my 6 year old Yamaha receiver which only has two optical inputs. The unit works perfectly and the included remote is handy.
Now about the Amazon experience. My first unit arrived with the center pin from the plastic protection plug broken off in the output jack so there was no way it could be used. There was no visible damage to the shipping or manufactures box, so I have to believe that the unit was shipped from the factory like that. Amazon was GREAT in shipping the replacement. I had it in hand the next day. Good job Amazon! The return of the bad unit was no hassle.
Upon arrival of the replacement unit, I noticed that the plastic protection plug in the output jack was bent slightly to the side. I thought "oh no here we go again" but the plug came out with no issues. The fact that the plug was bent sideways leads me to believe that the unit (even though it's bubble wrapped inside the factory box) does move around inside the box during shipping and puts pressure on the plug. Or possibly that too much force is used when inserting the plug during manufacturing. Either way, make sure you check that plug when the unit arrives.
One other thing concerning the output optical jack, the jack itself is slightly different than what I've seen on other devices with optical outs. The jack will not allow my TOSLINK cable to "click" into place and lock in the jack. The cable fits fine and doesn't fall out unless you pull on it but I thought I'd mention it just in case. Over time it might loosen up and allow the cable to fall out but I hope not. These is no current "standard" for TOSLINK cable ends, jacks, or connectors so they do vary slightly. I have three different brands of cables here and will try each one to see if any will click and lock in the jack.
With the exception of the output jack issues, this unit is well made, looks great, and should be a nice addition for anybody who has an older amp that lacks enough optical input jacks.
Cables To Go 40324 3-Play Component Video and TOSLINK Digital Audio High Performance Selector Switch (Black)
The remote is a great feature on a selector switch at this price point and was the main selling point for me. The remote is the size of a credit card and while it's flimsy and looks a little cheesy, it serves the purpose. One important note is that you must have a very clear path for the unit sensor to pick up the remote signal so if you need to install it in an awkward location or behind a glass door, you should keep this in mind. The remote is also easy to lose due to its small size but you can switch the components and power off the unit manually if need be. Better yet, the switch works with most universal remotes that have a learning feature (including the One for All and Harmony remotes). I programmed the switch functions into my universal remote in less than 1 minute and it functions perfectly.
The biggest complaint I have about this selector switch is the overall 1980's electronics appearance but mostly its the indicator lights. The front panel has large, bright green bars (two of them are lit at any given time) and the back of the unit has a bright red bulb indicating the switch component is active. Lights like that don't normally bother me but these are definitely a huge distraction and annoyance, especially the green lights. Why they used lights that large and bright is beyond me. Because of the IR remote sensor, there are limits to the way you can install the switch box so there really is no way to avoid the glare of those obnoxious lights. I personally addressed this by shoving the component switch way back behind the TV so the remote sensor could still pick up the signal but you can't really see the box anymore and then I put small pieces of painters tape over the lights to reduce their obnoxious glow. It's not pretty but neither is the whole box and since it's way back behind everything you can't see it so problem solved!
The only other complaint I have is one mentioned by several other reviewers which is that when powered off, the switch automatically defaults to the component 1 position. Not a huge deal with the remote but still kind of a pain so you should assign the most commonly used component to this position.
I have not experience any of the signal or color loss issues others complained about. I've also had no issues with loud pops or static with the audio. I'm not sure if the issue was with the particular switch they received or if it's a problem with the cables they are using. I used relatively cheap cables and they still worked just fine.
In conclusion, so far this seems to be a decent selector switch that works well, it seems well built and offers features found in units that cost more than twice the price of this one. The remote is by far the biggest convenience and if you can overlook (or otherwise deal with) the indicator lights, you should be good to go.
I selected this switch based on the reviews (or, specifically, the lack of negative ones), and the fact that this was an "active" switch (has it's own power supply) and was not passive like many others. I was not expecting a huge increase in video quality, because even though I was upgrading to a higher quality connection for my various electronics, I was running them through this switch, which I figured would degrade the signal quality some. I expected it to be a wash. I was wrong. Big ugrade in video quality for all three components. No ghosting or artifacts that others have claimed they saw.
I will say I am going three component signals in and one component signal out. No video converstion is required...it's a straight pass through of the signal. I suspect those that are complaining of flickering or artifacts may be switching signal input / output types.

Only slight criticism is that the lights are very bright and are distracting from watching the TV; but you can put something in front after selecting or even a tad of black electrical tape permanently over the lights.
