Product Description

Style: Male | Color: Blue

Using modular adapters with inexpensive silver satin or flat oval twisted pair wire has become a standard way to run client server applications. Needing to connect dumb terminals on the desktop back to a central patch panel or directly to a MUX via RS-232, many network planners have implemented modular adapters as the most cost-effective way to complete the connections. Whether used in a wiring closet or throughout the office, color-coded modular adapters lend easy identification and differentiation to your cable plan. By color-coding your connections, you reduce troubleshooting time while taking full advantage of the benefits of this modular adapter approach.

I bought this to use as a console cable for a Juniper SSG. The only issue I had was not knowing what color wire corresponded to each RJ45 pin, but that was pretty easy to look up online.

For anybody else who has the same question:

Pin 1: Blue
Pin 2: Orange
Pin 3: Black
Pin 4: Red
Pin 5: Green
Pin 6: Yellow
Pin 7: Brown
Pin 8: Grey

Since I'm not the vendor I can say that. Then again these should cost about $1 from an electronics supplier. People like me who have been using these things and similar since 1982 or so know that RS232 (what the DB9 carries) has a bunch of standards that these adapters are good for. So they are shipped uncommitted, they haven't plugged the wires in because where they go depends on final use. The two basic types are straight through (for connecting data control equipment DCE data terminal equipment DTE) and null-modem for connecting DTE to DTE, like hooking up two PCs. They call it null-modem because it's a data connection without a modem. DTE to DCE cables are straight through, DTE to DTE swap the data and control pins. Nobody who manufactures these things knows which application you have. Look up "rj45 db9 pinout" on google, without the quotes, to find the wiring standards.

Idiots who want a complete cable should order one and stop badmouthing the adapters the engineers need.

Bought a couple to make the 5-in-one network admin cable: [...] worked perfectly, just make sure to follow the directions carefully and I remember one of the colors being slightly off, e.g: white is grey.

I test RS-232 and RS-422 devices with various pin outs. These adapters work well. Use one for your RS-xxx transceiver and one for each of the various devices with different pin outs, label each one, and life is good. I used an Ohm Meter to verify the pin assignments. A simple RJ45 cable makes the connection. If you wire it correctly, a RJ45 crossover connector will serve as a simple null modem adapter ;)

I purchased these after reading about making your own DB9 converters for networking devices that require console ports, or DB9/DB25 ports. I followed the 5-in-1 Network Admins cable guide http://www.ossmann.com/5-in-1.html and all worked perfectly. I have used these to connect to devices that support flow control and other devices, some DB9, and some DB25 with the appropriate adapters and in all cases they have connected, I use the Gearmo RS232 to USB converter with built-in LEDs as my serial converter.

These work as well as you make them work; I have had no issues with bad connections or anything else. Below is a link to the pinout, in case you lose the sheet:

Good solid construction. Pins are very easy to connect, no special tool needed. Recommended.
