How does it feel when plugging and unplugging the cable?
It's not a smooth connection. Some audio cables connect without much force and stay connected perfectly. This one you have to put a little bit of extra pressure, there's a sudden snap, and then it's connected. It does stay connected very tight.
Does the material of the insulating make it tangle easier?
This cable is pretty short so you shouldn't have any tangling problems. The material feels very average. It neither gives one a sense of inferior or superior build. For the price, I would consider that a positive.
Is the audio quality hindered in any way?
I honestly can't tell. I don't use this cable to connect a $1000 sound producer to a $30000 speaker system. I use it at work with my earbuds. I've noticed no difference in audio quality since introducing this cable. If you are an audiophile, you likely already know what you need and won't be bothered by cables in this price range.
The ends aren't gold! Won't this be a terrible purchase?
Simply put, no. Gold connectors, as I understand it, are intended to make a connection with less resistance. Again, if you're doing something where high fidelity audio is produced and immaculately reproduced via top quality gear, that would likely make a difference. If you just need your earbud cable extended or don't like to have to reach around behind your PC to plug something in, you won't notice a difference at all.
Interference / Static:
Some cables pick up noise when near other cables or a cell phone. This cable is no exception and should probably be kept 8 inches or so away from an active cell phone. I do not have any problem with it running near the cables at the rear of my PC.
Overall, this is a cheap cable and you won't be punished for trying something so inexpensive. This is a perfectly fine purchase for a short audio extension cable.
Ultimately, I suspect that what happened is that Amazon sent me the real article, and Izo All Supply Co sent me some garbage knock-off. I really wish Amazon would keep tighter reigns on these fulfillment partners, or give me an option too never see them on product pages. I may go ahead and re-buy the other two. But I'll be very careful to order one sold and fulfilled by Amazon, not any of these fly-by-night outfits they let use their ordering system.
The important think to note here is that they don't seem to work with headphones that have a built-in microphone, like the earbuds that come with mobile phones. If the plug on your headphones/earbuds has 3 grooves or bands, this will NOT work. Standard headphones with only 2 grooves/bands on the plug will work just fine. At least that's what I've figured out.
I've included a picture. On the far left/bottom, the white plug belongs to the earbuds that came with my Samsung cell phone, they don't work with the extension cord. The middle plug belongs to the Sennheiser headphones I use at home for music and movies, it works just fine. The top/right plug is the extender. I think the number of bands needs to match for this to work.
Unfortunately, that's where the good ended. Parts of the audio are very muted, to the point that they are not detectable over other sounds through this extension, and others, while still muted somewhat, are at least clear. I tried this on several different devices/ear pieces, with multiple audio settings on each, and had the same issue with all. If I pull out the headphone jack and place the tip against the inside wall of the extensions input then I get the sounds that I usually cannot hear loudly in one ear, and the sounds that I can usually hear are gone. I've tried adjusting the depth of insertion since that has helped before with headphones and the like in the past, but there is no combination of anything that I have tried to get good, clear sound. Not a good quality item, at least not the one I received.
