What's good:
1. The ability to add more games to the console (I have not tried this yet though).
2. If your TV has a USB port (like my older Vizio) it can power this device (no need to get a USB power supply).
3. The ability to plug in an external keyboard (useful since the "keyboard" on this device is non-functional).
4. Inclusion of Commodore Basic (I have however not tried to write any of those old games from 80's magazines so am not sure how well it works).
What's not-so-good:
1. An overly stiff joystick. This makes playing the some of the wonkier 80's games even more difficult.
2. The virtual keyboard is too cumbersome to use with some of the games.
3. Lack of ability to adjust how fast some games run. It looks like some of them run a tad bit faster on this unit than on the original C-64.
Other things to note is the form factor. I take that making it look like Commodore 64 is expected to help with sales, since this is now supposed to be like a retro version of it. But this unit is approximately the size of a DVD case and the non-functional keyboard makes it look more like a toy-version of the original.
Also the unit has two USB ports on the right side. One of these is for the joystick, and the other can be used to plug in an external keyboard. I am not sure if there was any old two-player games that would have required two joysticks AND a keyboard but if so, playing those could be cumbersome with the inbuilt virtual keyboard.
Overall though I think that your ability to get entertainment value from this device depends on how interested you are in playing the older games that come with the device, or in putting some time in getting other games from the internet. Also most of the older games require speedy and exact reactions and the joystick may in this case be the biggest pain point.
I connected a USB keyboard so that I can program basic.
The Esc key is the 'Run/Stop' key, so the modern keyboard is actually easier to program.
Sure I play those game to recall some memory too.
It is pricey considering what you get, but childhood memory is just priceless.
Never Forget
You can even program in basic if you want. You will need a USB keyboard (not included)

What really puts this over the top is what doesn't come out of the box. To maximize the potential some things are needed. 1. a cheap usb keyboard (I had some just lying a round, you definitely don't need or really want to use as gaming keyboard). 2. a usb hub ( I got this one Sabrent 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub with Individual LED Power Switches (HB-UM43) and its working well so far) 3. usb flash drive (i'm using a 32gb sandisk with no problems). For power i'm using a generic 2 amp phone charging base and having no problem powering everything connected. This is how i have it set up.
Before doing anything else go to retrogames.biz and download the firmware update put it on the flash drive and follow instructions, this is crucial if you want to use other games and/or software. with this firmware you can play most single disk disk games off a flash drive without doing anything else (side loaded games is where the usb keyboard becomes crucial). Supported file types (that i have found) are .d64 .t64 .crt .prg .d81 (mixed success). There are some compilations for the c64 mini if you google it. Also if you want to play ultima 4, do a search for ultima 4 c64 remaster, this has a remastered version of it , one of them is a crt, so there is no problem with disk swaps.
On the whole it has been a great experience and it appears they are going to keep updating it.

I was a huge C64 fan back in the day. I had a complete system, and hundreds of games (literally, over 100 disks, each with multiple games).
Unfortunately, my brain remembered them as being a lot better than they are. I don't know what I was expecting, considering these are 8-bit graphics, but P.U., are these games bad.
Paradroid, Summer, Winter games, Jumpman...these were some of my favorite games, and when I tried them out, I just couldn't even keep playing them, they are so bad by today's standards.
I tried looking for another joystick that would work (a digital USB joystick? I have no idea where to get one).
**** I see a C64 joystick is now available on Amazon for $50. Glad I didn't buy it.
I played around with this for about an hour, and now it's all packed up back in the box, and I have no idea what I'm going to do with it.
Do yourself a favour and go watch come C64 youtube videos to get you fill, and save your $80.
Oh, BTW, this game system requires a USB charger for power, yet it doesn't come with it (just a USB to micro-USB cable).
I really wish I had never have purchased this.
Note: This unit worked well on my 34" LCD monitor, but when I went to plug it into my Pioneer receiver to rout it to my 15-year old Sony 49" LCD TV, I couldn't get a picture. When I plugged it directly into my TV I still couldn't get a picture. When I retested it on my 34" monitor again, it worked. I think there is an incompatibility between this unit and my Sony TV.
I was going to set it up in my living room for Xmas and let everyone get bored with it one person at a time but...Meh...I just returned it. I bet it would have worked on a newer TV.
I am glad it does have BASIC and you can type commands as well.
This machine was rather frustrating in the beginning, but after I went to the manufacturer's website and downloaded the newest firmware update onto a USB stick, THEN things became awesome and worked a lot better.
With that being said, here are a few items I recommend purchasing with the mini.
-USB keyboard (with number pad) as the keyboard on the mini is fake and non-functional and some games can be played via number pad after updating.
-USB HUB with 3-4 ports
-Adapter to plug in the micro-usb power cable into the wall (as it does not come with one, just the cord, I just used an extra one from my cell phone)
-Longer micro-usb cable (optional but recommended)
-USB gamepad (USB SNES controllers work great) but most wired USB game pads will work and are more comfortable than the clunky provided joystick (which is too tall in my opinion)
-USB stick formatted in FAT32 (For downloading of roms/games and updates from abandonware sites and archives) 2-4GB is all you really need
One downside is that I am still trying to figure out a work-around for my personal games that use more than one "disk" or "Side."
I highly recommend doing some reading and research online and on YouTube for answers. Hopefully this will be addressed in a future update.
Overall I love this little thing and there are workarounds with issues, but if you are debating or are completely new to the C64, I would wait until Dec 2019 when they are planning on releasing the newest version which is full size with a working keyboard, and hopefully has more upgrades to the firmware.
