A fascinating history of Britain's postwar aircraft projects and the advanced technologies they explored. This book gives detail to the many innovative and exceptional prototypes designed and developed by the aircraft giants of Britain and then describes the consequences of cancellations because of budget reductions. The end result was the loss of Britain's leading part in aircraft design, then the bankruptcy of its pioneering aircraft companies, and then the loss of all of those young technologists who would have been carried on their country's pioneering traditions in aeronautical design. A well-written book with lessons for all of us.

This book deals with the post war aviation industries of Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Due to changes in political views, government incompetence and budget cuts some very wonderful aircraft were halted, cancelled or destroyed. A few survived in altered format or were revived later, but the main point of the book is the loss in research and knowledge in aviation that was largely unnecessary and needless as those who didn't have a grasp of what was going on meddled around and ended up costing not only in the financial sense, but scientifically as well. A good read, but rather depressing if you're an aviation enthusiast.

Collector's item - in very good condition for a 28 year old book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 16, 2014Verified Purchase
Delivered as per advised schedule. Packaging more than sufficient to protect the item - double bubble wrap inner and outer tough brown paper.
The book was supplied with the original dustcover pristine; no torn, dog-eared or marked pages and only slight "Greying" to the outermost page edges - in fact slightly less than I would have expected with a book of this age.
This is a classic, originally published in the late1980s, (This edition 1990) by, I think, one of the author's of the earlier classic Battle of Britain dairy "Narrow Margin".
Its hardback, 250 pages, black and white photographs and line drawings accompany the text. One drawback is that the type face is in a small and slightly ornate font ( A cross between Gothic and Times Roman ?) which makes a magnifying glass necessary for me.
Nevertheless, probably unique as a catalogue of the experimental aircraft types (Mainly jet and military) which the UK aircraft industry tried out and discarded in the "Golden age" of the industry from 1945 to the mid-sixties. Other works such the more recent "Empire of the Clouds" make only passing refrences to this material. Its possible that only a copy of "Janes" for each of the respective years for this period and individual accounts from Test Pilot or aircraft industry doyennes biographies would yield anymore information than is found here - that's not to say that there won't be the odd "Profile" or "Signal" publication on oarticular topics.
Very please - hence 5 star

This book reveals the sad reality of our political system
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 9, 2013Verified Purchase
This book is brilliantly written to show the flaws in government thinking back in the post WW2 era. It also highlights the in-fighting within our military leaders. While some politically minded readers will disagree it demonstrates the case where politicians come to power and then get coerced into making decisions that suit our so called allies and not necessarily suit our country's best interest. It ably chronicles the string of disastrous cancellations of our aircraft industry and albeit with hindsight, details the overall costs and results of the cancellations. It also highlights the sad reality of our armed forces hierarchy's inability to work together or even come up with a fixed specification. The back biting and internal strife still goes on today. If revelations in this book are true then there ought to have been a case of treason among our political masters.
Not to be read by people with high blood pressure - no wonder it was banned in this country for years..
