WATCH OUT! PUNK IS COMING!

By the end of 1973, New York City was bankrupt, Watergate had compromised the credibility of the U.S. government, and the Carpenters were the best-selling young recording act in America. Rock 'n' roll was dead!

Enter Hilly Kristal, who dreamed of running a country & blues bar in the Bowery. Instead, the club he opened, CBGB (Country, Bluegrass, Blues) became the birthplace of punk and underground music. CBGB was the modern-day salon for the disenfranchised youth of New York City and Kristal gave these young local bands a stage. Artists such as the Talking Heads, Blondie, Patti Smith, Ramones, Dead Boys and Television all started at this iconic club.

The story of Hilly Kristal and his legendary club will be coming to theaters this October when CBGB hits the big screen. The film has an all-star ensemble cast headed by Alan Rickman (the Harry Potter series, Die Hard) who plays Kristal. Co-starring with Rickman will be Malin Akerman (The Proposal, Suburgatory), Ryan Hurst (Sons Of Anarchy), Ashley Greene (The Twilight series), Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory), Stana Katic (Castle) and Rupert Grint (the Harry Potter series).

Omnivore Recordings is proud to present CBGB: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ondouble-LP (with first pressing on translucent pink vinyl). An essential collection of songs that made the punk movement, CBGB presents twenty slices of original American music, many rarely compiled or unavailable for years. The soundtrack contains music from influential artists that informed the scene (The Velvet Underground, The Stooges and MC5), to acts that broke through with huge commercial acclaim (Talking Heads, Blondie and The Police). And there's even music from bands whose legendary status will forever be linked to the club that gave them a voice (Dead Boys, Television. Wayne County, The Dictators and more).

for first wave punk fans this is a must..if for nothing else, the never released in America tracks by Wayne County & The Electric Chairs ("Out Of Control", which is played constantly through the film),and Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers ("All By Myself" from the greatest punk era album ever , "L.A.M.F.")... all that's missing is "The Punk" by Cherry Vanilla and "NYC Song" by The Psychotic Frogs, but the album is a punk rock MUST!..Wayne is now Jayne County, and Johnny Thunders is RIP, but the scene lives on FOREVER!

While the movie is hit or miss (and often discredited by people who were there) this soundtrack is an absolute must have. (And if you really want to hear the grit and soul of it all buy it on vinyl - pink translucent vinyl that is.) It highlights some of the great talents that hit the CBGB stage and it also serves as history of the underground rock and punk movement.

Offering conclusive proof that the 70's were more than disco balls and The Captain & Tenille, this punky soundtrack to the movie "CBGB" mixes in classic New York punk and new wave, along with some classic proto-punk and the late owner of the club, Hilly Kristal, singing a country inflected ditty called "Birds and The Bees." It's enough to make you sappy for the old, ugly pre-Disneyfied Times Square.

The mix is pretty cool, as well. While you get some of the more obvious (IE famous) bands to break out from the CBGB stage (Blondie, Talking Heads), you also are offered some of the better bands that got brought into the big label league, only to fall victim to an audience (and more often than not, record labels) that just didn't get it. Those bands include delights from The Dictators, Laughing Dogs, Tuff Darts and others. Then there's the notorious of the bunch, like Wayne (eventually Jayne) County and Johnny Thunders. There's also quite a few others that fell somewhere in the middle, building a well known reputation but never equaling the talk with the sales (New York Dolls, Television, Dead Boys).

If it seems to you that the bands I'm pointing out are all pretty darn different from each other (Dead Boys' nihilistic punk is not the same as Blondie's power pop is not the same as Television's arty guitar compositions), then you're right. The tiny stage of CBGB's was a place that hatched all sorts of Bowery Bands, and while the DIY ethic was often the same, the bands could often be miles apart. So having the likes of the MC5 ("Kick Out The Jams"), Iggy and The Stooges ("I Wanna Be Your Dog") and The Velvet Underground ("I Can't Stand It") along for the ride shows that the roots of the NYC Scene came from just as many sources as the sounds the new bands were making on their own.

Its nice to know the early punk rock has made its mark on society. Most of the songs here are not the versions you would have hear if you were lucky enough to have been their. That said the music was good and worth the price if you don't go with out paying the rent just to buy it.

strange thing about the Cd is you hear 5 or 6 songs by Mink DeVille in the Movie and they call this the Original Soundtrack with no Mink DeVille songs. I"m not a lawyer, but if they had the rights for the movie don't know why they didn't have the rights for the soundtrack. Too bad.

There's no venue in America, and maybe even the world, that's as influential as CBGB in New York City. How the club didn't receive `Historic Landmark' status is beyond me - the club's famous for launching The Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, Television, and MC5. Established in 1973 by Hilly Kristal, CBGB was originally intended to host country, bluegrass, and blues acts (hence its acronym'ed name). However, the venue soon became a home for alternative acts that didn't really fit in elsewhere, and soon, the name "CBGB" became synonymous with names like Patti Smith, Blondie, and Joan Jett. Hell, the place was even the first American venue The Police played. Up until the day it closed in 2006, the venue served as a tastemaker for bands of the underground, and it was effectively a Who's Who of bands that were just about to break.

You may be thinking: wow, with such a rich history, there ought to be a book written about this volatile moment in music history! Well, dear reader, there are a few books written on this subject, including one written by the owner himself. Now, you may be thinking: wow, that's great, but I'm illiterate, and or I don't have time for books. Well, dear reader, they're making a movie (yes, a picture with motions!) about CBGB that's set to release in October of 2013. Before anyone even put together a script of this movie, they should have thought about securing the rights to some of the music that was launched out of CBGB, because it probably wouldn't work otherwise*. Luckily, the production was able to pull together enough money/indie-cred to make a nice, solid soundtrack featuring many of the bands that I've already mentioned.
