How to Use the CBT Deck
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a practical and action-oriented approach for quickly building positive emotions and meaningful engagement in your
life. You’ll find three powerful types of practices in The CBT Deck:
These three approaches overlap and will work together to reinforce one another. For maximum benefit, use one card each day, and be sure to practice the techniques rather than simply reading the cards. You can carry the day’s card with you or post it somewhere visible to remind you of what you’re working on.
If you ever need additional motivation, remind yourself of the positive changes you’re looking forward to that will make your efforts worthwhile. With repeated practice, you’ll find yourself using these techniques more automatically. I’m wishing you all the best along the way.

A Glance Inside the CBT Deck
Cognitive strategies for training your thoughts to serve you well.
Behavioral techniques for choosing actions that build the life you want to live.
Mindfulness practices for experiencing greater presence and connection in each moment.
Dr. Seth Gillihan is a master at converting the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy skills that are traditionally worked on in the clinician s office into a portable format that can be carried in everyday life. His three part framework of Think, Act, Be helps keep front and center the message that we all need to meld together mental shifts, behavioral shifts and mindfulness. The techniques offered in this card deck are based on the soundest science, shaped into easy and memorable takeaways. The cards are informative enough that they ll make sense to readers who are new to a concept, and they re concise enough for those therapist or clients who are experienced in CBT and want to use them as reminders. If you try even a portion of the experiments included on the cards you ll dramatically improve your ability to overcome your mindless defaults, and shift your thinking at will to choose whatever mindset and behavioral approach is most ideal in any given situation. --Alice Boyes, PhD, author of The Anxiety Toolkit and The Healthy Mind Toolkit
This is an invaluable set of practical therapeutic activities that I am confident your client will find most helpful. I routinely encourage my clients to use skills such as these, and now Dr. Seth Gillihan has organized these essential tools into a single, easy-to-use compendium. I highly recommend The CBT Deck for both therapist reference and client use. -- David M. Pratt, PhD, MSW, Director, Mood Management Program
"Applying his Think/Act/Be approach to emotional and behavioral wellness, Seth Gillihan has created a unique and engaging format for learning and practicing simple yet powerful daily exercises. Even if only half of the cards speak to you and nearly every card spoke to me there is so much here that you can apply to your life. One can hear Seth s calm, reassuring voice as he encourages us to be kind to ourselves and to develop life skills that will be relevant today, tomorrow, and beyond." -- Robert J DeRubeis, PhD
"We know clients get more out of therapy when they can practice the skills they learn in between sessions. The CBT Deck gives you a wide range of effective behavioral, cognitive, and mindfulness tools so you can leverage the power of your sessions and prescribe customized strategies for each client s unique needs." --Richard Sears, PsyD, ABPP, author of the CBT & Mindfulness Toolbox

As a clinical psychologist, I’m excited to recommend these cards to clients looking for easy ways to use CBT principles daily. I plan to keep the deck on my coffee table for clients to look through before and after we meet.
A final note—for therapists and clients alike, The CBT Deck offers countless useful strategies that can be used as an adjunct to therapy, but even if you’re new to CBT, or just curious about its methods, Dr. Gillihan’s clear, engaging, and supportive writing style will help you quickly understand the concepts and enhance your motivation to apply the ready-to-use tools. This is a great resource!
I like that this set is based upon helping me learn to build positive emotions by re-directing my thoughts. It also adds an extra element by giving me an exercise to practice (build skills) each day! I just randomly pull one out and work on it that day or look for a specific card when I am feeling emotionally triggered and need to redirect/reinterpret (reframe) my thoughts.
I picked up a couple of random cards the same day it was delivered. All of the insights/actions were super relevant, well worded, concise and inspiring.
I think this is an awesome resource for anyone trying to make a positive change in their lives or wanting to help someone else.
