I highly recommend this thermometer to anyone, it measures very accurately and allows for perfect candy and sugar solutions during each use. The only thing that would cause this Therm. to malfunction would be human error (see above review). And no, I do not work for or have any connections to the manufacturer. I just really like this piece of equipment.
After that episode I ordered a second thermometer, exact one, so I'd have back up. I have to have one with the alarm because of vision issues and find any thermometer difficult to read at an angle while stirring a pot of hotter than boiling sugar.
So really my only complaint is that there isn't a way to turn off the thermometer manually so that it doesn't drain the batteries while it's just laying around between batches.
I gave it one more try with fudge, and again, it was a good 20° lower than the other probe. I used the soft-ball test just to ensure that the test probe wasn't the problem, and the syrup formed a soft ball while this thermometer was still at 220°. So, back it goes. I will try with the Maverick thermometer again.
Wide temp range, no need for more than one thermometer
Quick reference guide on the storage shield
Dual positioning clip
Stainless (no breaking glass thermometers)

Highly recommend it!
