I wasn't planning on writing a review for this product until it survived being dropped in my 154 deg F mash for 15-20 seconds. I thought for sure I'd be buying a new thermometer but all the hot mash did was make the thermometer look cleaner. Really well made product and can't recommend enough. I don't baby this thing and it still looks brand new.
This is supposed to be an instant read thermometer, but I noticed with some experimenting that the "instant" is more like a few seconds. I wouldn't just open your oven, stick this in a piece of meet for a fraction of a second and expect to get an accurate reading (NB: you cannot leave this thermometer in the oven).
There are probably better thermometers out there, but not for this price.
As instructed on the website, I shipped it back to the company with proof of purchase for repair or replacement. Bubble wrapped for safety, padded mailer. That was almost 8 weeks ago, and haven't heard a peep out of them since then. It's almost not worth it to follow up with this company.
If their product itself doesn't break down, which it did - twice now, then their warranty related customer service will. At least for me.
Update; I eventually called the company and they claimed they never received it, which is why I never heard back from them. BUT were quite friendly and gracious and sent me a new thermometer, which so far has been working well.
At 32°F/0°C this thermometer was spot-on, and at 165°F/~73.9°C it was within a tenth of a degree (F). For under $20, I'm impressed.
The tip is super small, about as thick as a quarter, so it easily slides into thinner cuts of meat.
The little sheath it comes with has handy reference list for cooking various meats from rare to well done in F and C. The sheath also has a hole at the bottom so it's easy to clean out and you don't have to worry about fat or oil getting trapped in there and going all gross.
The front has an extremely easy to read display and 5 buttons: On/Off, Hold (which you press to retain the last measured temp), Max (which shows you the max temp recorded), C/F to switch back and forth between real units and Fahrenheit (quick rule of thumb to go from C to F: Double it and add 30, not super accurate but gets the job done) and my favorite feature the Calibration button. You make a slurry of ice and water, stick the thermometer in, and hit cal to set it to 32F. Simple, effective and fast. Also they have it programed for the calibration button to only work between 30 and 34 degrees so you can't accidently screw it up.
Also the front face is large enough to stand the thermometer upright so the tip doesn't touch anything and get dirty.
Comes with a LR44 battery and the twist off back is easy enough to remove and replace with a flat head screw driver.
Notice this is a quick read thermometer. It's not meant to be stuck in a roast and left in an oven and also it does take half a second to register a temperature change so it can drift a little. When I stuck it in hot oil it took a few seconds to finally reach it's max temp and it bounced back and forth by a degree or so once it got there. Even in the ice water slurry it still wavered between 31.5 and 32.5 degrees. That's why I took off one star, it's not inaccurate but it's not instant and isn't quite as stable as my infrared thermometer. On the other hand that can't measure the inside of a steak so perhaps a fair trade off.
