Yes, it's a miracle, but this relic of the days when PC's were known as "IBM compatibles" can still be found working on desktops far more advanced than the ones the stick was originally purchased for. I bought mine in 1990 for my 10Mhz AT and found installation was a snap. It was very reliable, with a low incidence of uncontrolled inputs or "spiking" (likely caused by heat or magnetic interference), and the two button set-up meant I didn't have to take my hands off the controls to switch from missiles to guns or from Mavericks to Mk. 83's. In 1989, that was about the extent of HOTAS (allowing you to dogfight w/o havong to take your hand off the controls). How old is this stick? I first played it on Spectrum Holobyte's "Falcon" - not "Falcon 3.0" or even "Falcon AT", just plain old no-nonsense "Falcon". This thing easily outlasted all the games played on it.
So why only 3 stars? Though joysticks are the weak-link when it comes to reliability, this product does not have monopoly on longetivity. I've bought used Thrustmaster FCS sticks that, for their wear and tear, were as reliable. I've also purchased the Thrustmaster Top Gun Platinum for less than this and have found it both more reliable and, with its many buttons, more functional as well. Even putting price aside, a 2-button stick is simply too primitive for the high performance sims of today: a hat switch for "padlocking" (who came up with that word anyway?) is essential even for WWII and WWI sims that otherwise won't require complex sensors and controls (sure, there's no SAR on a Mustang, and you won't have to futz with mil settings on a SPAD, but you at least want to be able to turn your head without having to take your hands off the controls). In short, you can find hardware about as reliable and easily more functionable elsewhere.

Quite possibly the most durable joystick ever built. Period. Has everything the desk top pilot needs except a #3 and #4 button and a hat switch, and for those you can spend a little more on the CH Products Flightstick Pro. The Flightstick is worth 4 stars for bulletproof reliability, functionality, and value. For a 5-star joystick, get the Flightstick Pro with the extra buttons and a hat switch - invaluable for desktop flight simming.
** Update, January 28, 2004. This stick is now in my garage gathering dust. I would suggest you go for the 4-button and hat-switch sticks instead of something as basic as this. You really do need all 4 buttons and the hat switch to even begin to enjoy flight simulations. And go with the USB model so you can mix and match the stick with other peripherals.

I must say I was impressed by this joystick. It may not have the features of newer sticks, but it has proven very reliable. I bought mine nine years ago, and it served faithfully for all that time. There were occaisonal glitches when installing it on a new computer, but they were dealt with after around 10 minutes. If they were still around, I would recommend them to everyone.

I bought mine about 10 years ago for an old 386 machine...I've since upgraded my PC many times, but haven't had to get a new joystick until recently when this one would no longer respond in one direction. For the money, and if you don't need all the fancy stuff (hat switches, etc.) this is absolutly the best stick you can buy!
