HERO: Marsh Fielding, 34 -- Cop. Untrusting of women and determined to never settle down. From a large Irish-Catholic family to whom he is close. I didn't always love him. He was a little bit hard to deal with at some points.
HEROINE: Chloe Faust, 29 -- Freelance crime writer. Complete distrust regarding cops and men. Wants a baby.
MAJOR SECONDARY CHARACTER: Mary MacFee, 129+ -- Ghost.
PLOT: Chloe has been convinced by Mary, her resident ghost, to solve Mary's murder. Jamie, Mary's fiance, was hanged for the crime over 100 years ago, but Mary is sure he didn't do it. Chloe has signed up for a criminal justice class at the local community college to gain some skills and assistance in this investigation. What she gets is Marsh Fielding, the detective teaching the class. The sparks fly from the first meeting, but both are wary of relationships. Marsh doesn't even believe that Mary is a ghost until most of the way through the book. Together, they investigate Mary's murder, falling in love along the way. However, their differing views on children and long-term relationships cause trouble for them.
BOOK: Standalone as far as I can tell though there are some potential threads for a series. Full length.
POV: dual first person
SETTING: Salem, Oregon
HEAT LEVEL: moderate, 3/5 - a few sexy scenes
ENDING: HEA, a little bit abrupt, epilogue -- one year later
OTHER COMMENTS: There were a couple of thoughts or ideas that were brought up that weren't seen through to the end. They were mostly in passing, but they were not satisfactorily tied up.
I am really loving every Ann Simas book I read. Her stories are so thorough and her characters are so real. The stories are so detailed you can actually see it playing out in your mind as a movie while you're reading it.
Definitely 5 stars here!
Chloe is facing her 30th birthday and with no man in sight that she wants to marry, she decides to turn to science to give her a baby. She also signs up for a criminal investigation class to help her solve her great, great, great aunts murder. Her best friend, however, happens to be the ghost of said aunt.
Marsh has taken over teaching the criminal investigation class. He doesn't expect to be attract to the woman in his class who seems a little nuts, trying to reopen a case that's over a century old. He agrees to help her out though, and is in for a shock when he goes to her house for the first time.
I really enjoyed reading Chloe’s Spirit by Ann Simas. It was a little bit of Mystery, Romance and a little Paranormal thrown into the mix. I am a big fan of mysteries so this definitely captured my attention and held it throughout the book. Plus, Ann Simas is a great author.
I was hooked at the first paragraph in the prologue of the book. The description of the crime that was being committed sucked me into the book. Ann had amazing details as well in the scene. I felt as if I was in the room watching it all unfold.
I totally loved all the characters in the book and how they were all relatable. Chloe and Marsh Fielding were my ultimate two fave characters in the whole book. Their chemistry was amazing and out of this world.
Chloe lives in a house with her great great aunt, and even though Aunt Many never leaves the house she is a living viable person to Chloe, she is loving, and teaching and conniving and scandalous and totally, totally dead. In fact she's been, well not gone, but 'gone' for over 100 years. Murdered, but not as the world thinks by her beloved Jamie. . . and she needs Chloe to right the wrong.
Chloe takes a class in forensics and promptly falls for Marsh, the cop instructor even though Chloe puts cops on the no fly list.
A delightful story, I ate it up!
