Definitely described my Chippy and gave me so much insight on what is reality for the law enforcement families. Great read before diving into a relationship with someone in law enforcement as well as someone who is already married into the life. The life may or may not be for you and this book helped with my decision. And it is truly a book of wisdom for my interactions with this new relationship with the CHP life and my Chippy.

I did not like this book at all. It basically says the wife must rearrange HER life and attitudes to benefit their cop husband. For example, "we cannot be too independent that we cease to need them because we married rescuers and our guys want to be needed (pg. 55)." How old fashioned and sexist is that? Women want to feel needed too and we like our independence. I think it's worse for a wife to be too dependent on their husbands. It also says that we have to voice our expectations and assumptions to our husbands to avoid miscommunications (some of the examples in the book made it seem like arguments that aroused were the wife's fault) and not to nag them too much to get stuff done because they are either too lazy or too busy to do them (women are busy too, but we get stuff done!). As a police wife, I personally gained nothing from this book. The author seems to look at police marriage through rose colored glasses. As long as the woman stays insubordinate and makes changes to her life, the marriage will work. Shoot, the husband needs to find ways to make the marriage work too! Marriage is a TEAM effort, whether or not you're in a police marriage. There needs to be a book out there with real examples that talks about what really happens behind closed doors in some police marriages.....physical, emotional, verbal abuse, police suicide, alcoholism, infidelity, divorce, depression, anxiety, even murder/suicide (cops killing their wives and then themselves). Ellen Kirschman's "I Love a Cop" is a much more realistic book for police families.

Victoria shares her wisdom and experience in being a Law Enforcement wife. This is an excellent must read for new and even "seasoned" police wives who just want and need to understand what this life is all about.

If you are new to the world of the LEO wife this book is a must read! So many things that I thought I was experiencing myself thinking I was crazy but after reading the book I found out that there are so many of us out there feeling the same way!!! Since my LEO is a state cop it's hard to get together with other woman in the force but after reading this my LEO and I are visiting a couple from his academy class next week even though we are hours apart! So please read!!!

Although the author has some good ideas, such as opening communication, she gives the implication that nothing is more important than the cop. I would caution anyone from giving this to a new spouse of a LEO...it would scare anyone who doesn't know better. I've been with my Trooper for 22 years and this is NOT how our life is at all.

Ever wish for a manual on being a cops wife? Well this book is close to it. It puts everything in perspective and I am thankful for Mrs. Newman for sharing her trials and tribulations as well as others stories. I've even gotten my LEO to start reading it!

I have had the pleasure of using this book in both undergraduate and graduate courses on police ethics. One reason this book was chosen was because Victoria's approach gave students invaluable information to consider when we evaluated the potential ethical problems in the police officer's personal family setting. Many of my students, after using the book for class, elected to keep the book and pretty much ever student gave the book high praise as part of the course evaluation process. The book is concise yet contains a wealth of information. It is a useful book for both the law enforcement officer and spouse. Though written by a female spouse much of the information easily adapts to the male spouse of a female officer.

While each chapter contains valuable information there are specifically two chapters which routinely popped up in my student's writing about the book. The first of these is chapter 6, which focuses on the emotional side of being married to a law enforcement officer. Again, one must understand that the book is written from the female perspective so the male spouse reading this book will need to make adjustments to the recommendations. That is not a difficult thing since all of the recommendations in the book by Mrs. Newman are written in a way that focuses on problem and solution. Because of the approach to identifying a problem and then exploring solutions the book is valuable to any spouse, regardless of gender or any other personal characteristic.

The other chapter that I will comment on for this review is chapter 9, which deals with money issues. Most know that police at all levels make a moderately good salary but nowhere close to what other professionals make.
