Let me start by saying, this is one of the best movies ever made, and definitely one of my top ten favorites.
Unfortunately, I don't speak Chinese and the description in Prime Video says that this version is in English (like the DVD is) when it actually is only in Chinese. It's not a problem for me, but I have children that can't read yet that I would love to have watch this movie with me since it is a family movie.
Unless Prime Video puts the movie in English, get the DVD with the English Dub if you want to watch the movie without reading subtitles, but definitely get the movie.

This is such an awesome and a movie one can learn from about morals and what is important in life as a family. It's not just funny but sentimental. When this first came out I had a copy of it and my nephews and nieces would watch this over and over nearly everyday. Needless to say, one of their favorites. One of my nephews was 4 and one of the nieces 3 and they couldn't get by in a day without it. Their older sister asked me a couple of months ago about this and it prompted me to search for it and buy it for her. Even at 16 now, she loves this and it's a great memory for her. So I surprised her with this purchase. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone. I'm personally not one for the subtitles so I was really glad that the options were there for the English dubs and turning the subtitles off. After all, I did have to make sure the video was up to par and looked good so I watched it before getting it to her. :D ;)

We'll be watching this excellent movie with just such great values and the value ...

This is just a rare find. It is a treasured movie in this house. We'll be watching this excellent movie with just such great values and the value of hard work and the human being. Couple things that'll make you wanna go "Uhm, okay" but the movie is great. I think, for me, it was like I was getting the same feeling watching the Goonies or something. The movies are not the same at all. Only, the feeling of watching the movies were. Near Epic, for me. Will watch over and over. Note: keep a sharp eye for hidden treats from other Stephen Chow movies.

Great movie, me and my grandkids did not mind reading the captions because the movie was so thoughtfully made that without the English captions you could see and know what the movie is about. It made you use emotions. It was funny (made you laugh out loud), hope, cheer (when the bullies got what they deserved), sad (when the father died), Inspirational (when his life was returned), see change in the hearts of children and desire to make the world a better place.

There really isn't much Stephen Chow in 'CJ7', so don't bother watching it for his appearances. Most of the screen time is taken up following a young boy who's poor father (Chow) works very hard to send to a private school. The boy does not fit in with the affluent and aggressive students, and his problems become complicated by the arrival of an alien pet his father finds in the dump.
Fans of Chow's films may greatly enjoy the scenes where the young boy dreams of the miraculous things his new pet might accomplish for him at his school. One of these scenes features a hilarious homage to 'Kung Fu Hustle' that was worth the price of the movie for me, but which would be lost on someone unfamiliar with that film.
Overall: the plot is painfully predictable, the peril the alien pet is placed in is too intense for very young viewers, the romantic sub-plot is underdeveloped, and there is just too little Stephen Chow. If you are a fan of Chow's films, you will want to see it for completeness. Otherwise, pass.

I stumbled across this movie as a pay-per-view rental while looking for something for my family to watch on a Friday night. My kids were a little put off by the notion of subtitles, but that concern was gone within the first 90 seconds of the movie. I went into the movie with no preconceptions (never heard of Stephen Chow) and was pleasantly surprised by the movie. I laughed so hard I cried, and I just plain cried. It is the little details in this movie that are surprising, funny, and touching. Just see it, with an open mind. Your kids have to be at least old enough to read the subtitles, and probably should be a bit older to really get the most out of the movie. It is NOT primarily about the cute little character, CJ7. It is more about the relationships between Dicky and his father and classmates, and how they are affected by what happens after CJ7 arrives. I am here to buy many copies for friends.

DO NOT RENT OR BUY IT!!!
When it said it’s Chinese audio, it was Mandarin, this movie is suppose to be in CANTONESE!!!
You would thought that they have the original movie on Amazon Prime, but NO!
The mandarin version is NOT THE ORIGINAL MOVIE!!!

this a sony production! i first saw this heartwarming story a few years back on cable and i am sure it may have been overlooked by most.....be sure to check it out as it is such a cute story! a lot can be 'lost in translation' so i prefer to watch this movie in cantonese with english subtitles....(dubbed in english just doesn't cut it) .....if you know what i mean! it is a children's story and is based along the lines of most disney productions in terms of defeat and triumph in the end! you will definitely get a kick out of the characters, it is a little mix of jackie chan and steven spielberg!

I know as a mature adult I am not supposed to enjoy movies made for children but as a 72 year old child I enjoyed this movie enormously. So it goes without saying that I do recommend that any other overage kid buy it.

Just not as good as the others

Like a few reviewers have said, it's not as good as Shaolin or Hustle, but I wanted to see it anyway thinking it might be the reviewers didn't appreciate a family movie. But, it really is just not that good.
