I was on a ski trip to Steamboat Springs in March -- and Clif Bloks made my day and saved my life.
My friends and I were out to dinner the night before. We could see snow falling in the window. It was going to be a great day on the mountain the next day. About 9PM I got a text from a fiend who was a Steamboat local. He was planning to do the "first tracks" pass to get out earlier than the standard lift ticket... that also meant we were going to have a guide for the day to take us to all the powder across the mountain.
That also meant that from dinner to waking up the next day to being on the mountain, there wasn't much time. My buddy and I woke up the next day, grabbed some quick food from the cabin, but also brought Clif Bloks.
I brought both the bloks with and without caffeine. I loaded up a couple sleeves in my chest pocket and had a block or two on rides throughout the day. They powered us through an amazing day of initially ripping open fields of powder and quickly dipping into cut runs on our snowboards through the trees. The energy level never dropped. We were among the very first runs of the day but also watched the crowds go in for lunch.
By mid afternoon we were cutting into even denser trees to get more of the heavenly feeling of powder. As we cut into some of those tighter tracks, our guide (who had been amazing all day) fell in a tight track. I recognized the challenge a little too late -- and I ended up running into an Aspen tree at near full speed. I don't think I've ever hit anything that hard in my life. I was on my back, gasping for air and looking up to see the Aspen still rattling from the strike.
I slowly regained my air, stood up and did the mental inspection of my body. I was ok fine. I had struck the tree directly with my chest -- and very importantly in precise spot where the Clif Bloks were in my pocket. The firm squishiness had absorbed some of the impact and (I'm nearly positive on this) kept me from breaking a rib.
By that point we were pretty late in the day. We took a few more runs to celebrate my lack of severe injury before calling it a day. Clif Bloks went above and beyond that day... powering one of my top 10 lifetime days on a snowboard and protecting me from my most violent snowboard accident ever. Thanks Clif team.
