Four reasons for using when biking

My wife and I use Bloks when we ride. First, they are easy to open and eat while riding. Second, unlike gels you can consume as many of the blocks as you want and keep the rest in your pockets without getting the sticky remnants from a gel. Third, they are easy to digest...just add a swig of drink. Finally, they are the best pick-me-upper that we've found.

We always use the black cherry variety as it has added caffeine, a nice feature when the legs are sandbagging.

There are many "on the bike" snacks, all with similar nutritional values. In the final analysis packaging, I have found, makes a huge difference. Trying to get past the wrapping and gobble down some energy at 15-18MPH is one way to end up with your nose buried in a gully or the whole of you stuck to a mountain side.

These snacks are very easy to manage on the bike and at speed; just tear off one end and squeeze out one of the six pieces in the package. If you've not gotten to the last one yet, it's an easy matter to roll over one end of the package and shove it back in your jersey pocket. After the last cube you've got a small bit of wrapping which is easy to hold on to and dispose of (properly, dammit!) at the end of the ride.

Each "cube" is an easy-to-manage bite which is no problem to chew on for the next half-mile or so... and, you don't need a swallow of water when it's half chewed, either. And, not to worry about staining your prize jersey as the cubes don't leak or stain.

All the flavors are distinctive and tasty but I prefer the taste of the Shot Bloks which are darker in color.

I have a pretty high caffeine tolerance, and drink a pitcher of coffee a day. When I'm out in a park or the beach for the day I don't have any coffee with me, so I started bringing some of the Bloks out with me. When I'm running around for 5-8 hours playing frisbee and not eating - my energy can start flagging, when I need a boost, I take 2 bloks and within 15 minutes I'm revved up - I feel like they give a much smoother energy boost than when I was taking caffeine pills with my water (which has sometimes given me jitters along with the energy), somehow the extra sugar energy that goes with them gives a more balanced boost from both the sugar and the caffeine together, the Clif Bloks have never given me that edgy jittery feeling even when I've taken too much (6 at once! not recommended!) and on top of that, the taste and texture is just plain scrumptious. They taste like great gummy candy. I'd tried caffeinated gum and mints also in the past and they tend to range from gross to disgusting to intolerable. Somehow Clif Bloks made caffeine supplements that taste fantastic and work fantastic as well.

They taste good, deliver caffeine, and give you some energy.

The bloks themselves have an odd semi-gummy consistency. It's basically a very firm gummy. If you were to try to squish a blok, it would bend a bit, then softly break into two pieces. Hard to describe. I like it, but not everyone will.

My biggest gripe is with how each package opens. I'm not sure why Clif thinks their packaging is good -- it's pretty obviously awful.

The plastic usually does not tear cleanly. Instead, it will just stretches to the point that the ink in the plastic starts to rub off on you. Eventually you'll strecth a part of it thin enough that it will tear, in which case you need to hope the tear will travel in a direction conducive to creating a hole large enough for the bloks to come out. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. If you lose, you need to pry the hole open with your finger.

In either case, you're left with a flap of inky plastic hanging over where the hole is, and it'll be up in your face when you try to squeeze a blok out into your mouth. It's really just annoying and stupid.

I eat these at the climbing gym with chalky hands, and it's very difficult to open and/or plop one into your mouth without getting some chalk on it, because the whole process is way too involved for what it is.

I don't know why they just don't let it open like a bag of potato chips -- where you just pull it apart and leave a hole in the top of the package. Seems very obvious to me.

These are an easy, tasty way to keep yourself energized for long runs. Less sticky than gels. Don’t need as many blocks as jelly beans. They take longer to chew and ingest, so the energy release seems longer and steadier.

One caution: I was mislead by Bike Nashbar’s storefront and ended up paying $25 shipping for a $25 box of blocks. It was advertised as amazon prime but they claim it wasn’t. They have a mediocre seller rating. I’m guessing they’ve ripped off others before me.

I so love Black Cherry because it gives me discernible energy. That's probably the result of the 50 mg of caffeine. But, I'm sort of tired of the flavor, so I thought to try the Salted Watermelon. Love the flavor, but I feel no change in my energy level. I work and recreate in the Florida heat and humidity a lot, so I rely on Shot Blocks to keep me going. Salted Watermelon didn't provide that, but I was probably still doing something good for myself through the added salt. As I say, the taste is divine.

Although most of the flavors are very similar, I keep coming back to Mountain Berry for endurance cycling. They are easy to stow in the bike's bento box, easy to grab on the go (hint: snip the end off the sleeve before you set out, rather than tear it lengthwise), small enough to keep in your cheek for a slow burn, but soft enough to chew up quickly before a brutal climb (so you aren't sucking pieces down your windpipe).

For ride of greater than 60 miles, these are the solution that suits me best, better than GU because they are far less messy, and produce significantly less trash.
