This book is outstanding for anyone who is looking for a model to assist their company processes. I have read this book forwards and backwards leading into our CMMI appraisal and without the help of the book, we would not have styled our processes and procedures correctly to achieve our CMMI ML3 objectives. The only downside, is after i purchased this book, I found a copy of it online as a PDF. It can be found here: http://www.sei.cmu.edu/reports/10tr033.pdf

Excellent support for anyone attempting to achieve CMMI-DEV. I use it to mentor our project teams - gives good insight into what the standard means, how to apply it to different situations and development methodologies. Make sure you get the current version.

CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) models are the product of the industry's best coming together to build a collection of best practices that help organizations to improve their processes.

The version 1.3 core framework now supports CMMI for Services, CMMI for Development, and CMMI for Acquisition. This book covers CMMI for Development.

It begins with an introduction to process improvement, the CMMI history, the CMMI framework, and CMMI for development.

It then has several chapters that go into detail explaining the ins and outs of the CMMI framework. Topics covered include Core Process Areas and CMMI Models, Understanding Levels, Structures of the Continuous and Staged Representations, Understanding Capability Levels and Maturity Levels, Process Areas, Achieving High Maturity, Recursion and Iteration of Engineering Processes, Adopting CMMI, and SCAMPI Appraisal Methods.

My favorite chapter in this section is Chapter 4: Relationship Among Process Areas. It has great diagrams that show the relationships between the process areas. It really helps to give them context.

Part one ends with Essays and Case Studies. It has 5 essays and 3 case studies. My favorite essay is Ten Missing Links to CMMI Success. Some of the other are Avoiding Typical Process Improvement Pitfalls, Hiring a CMMI Consultant or Lead Appraiser, and From Doubter to Believer: My Journey to CMMI.

The book then continues with a detailed overview of the Generic Goals and Generic Practices which is followed by a chapter on each of the Process Areas in the CMMI for Development. Each chapter about a process area gives in-depth coverage.

Look no further if you're involved in process improvement based on the CMMI for Development model. This book not only contains the complete CMMI for Development V1.3 model but also tons of tips and hints, explanations and case studies. I've been involved in CMMI based process improvement in multiple organization for numerous years and this is definitely my "go to" reference book.

I took a class recently and they provided the material, but I splurged and bought the book. The tabbed process areas come in handy and its a easy reference to use for the CMMI DEV model. I highly recommend that if you are new to CMMI or your job requires it to pick up this book.

This is a good text when used with instructor lead training. Purchased six weeks before the training and could not connect the dots. When the instructor set up the structure in class it all made sense. Not recommended without guidance or experience. This is not a beginner's text.
