This book is completely outdated. I am building my own CNC machine and this book had good reviews. This book shows you a lot of tricks on how to build your own logic boards and circuitry but you can accomplish the same task using arduino.

This is a great book! It has the patten to build a cotroller box and tells you how to build the machine. so dont listen to other people. If you want to build these machinces for a shop and friends I suggest you buy this one first and even buy the 166.00 dollar text book on cnc design. Still trying to figure out to build a lathe that you can adjust from big to small. And build another machince that can cut metal parts. I think its a mill.

I admire Geoff's energy and enthusiasm but after consideration, decided not to duplicate his efforts.
His first enthusiasm is in creating his own electronics driver for his CNC router. I found a number of commercially available units for sale for less than the cost of the parts, and they have more function. I'll spend my time on the mechanics. As for a first machine his mechanics is a big step up. I have reviewed other publications and web sites and have found that foraging for information and ideas, for me, then designing my own machine, is the way to go.
This is an opportunity for Amazon buy back.

There are too many major flaws in this book. He builds his machine with a Nu-Arc camera positioner. How is anyone else supposed to find this exact model? Probably the worst part are the IC logic and driver chips. You will not be able to put this together unless you are already an experienced electronic technician.

He shows you a schematic with some seemingly 80's era integrated circuits. (Judging by the xerox-looking images and misspelled words). These chips are hopelessly out of date. Modern chips have built in protective diodes, so you won't have to search all of creation for the ones his plans require. The way to go is to by a driver kit for $20 from Electronickits.com. (You'll need 3 of these).

Some things he did made me wonder why:

1) Why have so many little jumper points on the boards for options that are unlikely to be used? I bought wire connectors for these unneccessarily. He didn't list mini-jumpers in the parts list. Only after very carefully studying the pictures, can you see what he is doing.

2) On page 4 he says he was impressed by how nice the Pac-Sci stepper motor people were to him when they were selling him his motors. On page 14 he says that he's not using Pac-Sci motors! Why? What happened? We paid some bones for this book and we want to learn from his experience. There just isn't enough explaining in this book.

On the good side is that this book will teach you how easy it is to make your own circuit boards: Laser paper and an iron. You have to experiment a little, but it is very satisfying to know that you will be able to make your own boards if the need arises. I found that removing the paper while it is still hot will deposit enough "resist". No need to soak in water. The chemicals aren't really that nasty (even Radio Shack sells them). Just use warm water instead of a burner and wait longer than you otherwise might. BTW if you already own this book take a look at the lower picture on page 102. I had to wonder why is he using a different resist pattern than the one he wants us to use. He should be consistent between his photos and what we're supposed to do.

I think that Dave Rigotti's book is much much better. He will personally give you advice through his Yahoo site. And, it's "cozy". By that I mean there aren't 5000 things on the site to get everything confused. His is more focused.

I'd give this book a 1, but I did learn how to make my own PCB's and he also recommends a decent CAD CAM software (KCam).

Definitely NOT CNC Robotics!

At best, it is just "build a machine that response to CNC program (G-Code)to kill your time - if you have too much."

Ask yourself the follow question before buy this book: Can you accept a CNC with unknown accuracy (my guess is 1mm error at best)? If you can accept it, this book is for you.

I didn't and will not follow the author's path, followings are the reason:

1) He use scrap material, he dismantle his camera for "liner rail", he find "square" beam from scrap shops...etc. His measurement of "square" is based on combination square. His measurement of level is based on "trial & error" with height gauge, not even dial indicator.

2) He use stepper motor based on "available" and didn't mention how you can estimate the required torque to drive the ...... ACME lead screw. ACME is good for its lower cost compare with Ball screw, but you've a price to pay, backlash. Some CNC software can handle it, but the author just didn't care. I doubt when it mill a square, will / can it closes the path?

3) It is just a CNC table that clamps a pen or a router on its Z-Axis. So, it is just a wood-working CNC router, not a CNC machine, definitely not `robotics' standard. God, the book's name is too sexy for me.

4) Don't expect any calculation / estimation that can help to design you own CNC, there is no such thing in this book, and everything is done by wild guess.

5) Don't expect to gain any insight from watching / learning the author's approach to build a CNC. He use lengthy text description on how he drill a hole, put the steel beam in level (concrete floor) and use "measuring tape" to locate the centers for drilling. It is terrible, if you're a (hobby) machinist or dealing with metalworking. Can you imagine to 'arc weld' your machine's frame? What accuracy will leave for your measurement after such a destructive task is done?

Why I buy this book? It's because the author write a very sexy preface and introduction, a very logical table of content, and most important, Kindle let me preview only up to the first chapter. My verdict: save your money.

If you can settle with the low accuracy & repeatability, why need a CNC? If you just want to repeat routing a 2.5D pattern, just make yourself a fixture / jig / template will be more than enough.
