Next up was matching exterior paint. This is truly a challenge as each exterior wall gets a slightly different amount of sun and, thus, fades at a different rate. Unfortunately, there were no removable parts on the exterior of our house that matched the fade level of a small area that needed touch up. Hence the need for the Color Muse. After making a half dozen or so measurements--each area of knock-down textured stucco gave a slightly different reading--I was off to the paint store. I was shocked to find that paint stores are not able to take the raw data from the Color Muse and do an exact match. Rather, they are only able to take one of the app's recommended "near match" colors as starting point. It took two trips to the paint store and about 2 hours of a very patient employee's time tweaking and tuning to get a good match. The process is tedious. We started with the closest match, then ran a quart, painted a small area, then used the Color Muse app's inspect function to compare a sample to the readings from my exterior wall. The app does a decent job of indicating how good the match is, but take this number with a grain of salt. Next, the paint store employee would take his best guess as to which of the four tints in his system would best tweak the color and run another sample, paint an area, let it dry (used a heat gun to speed it up), than back to the Color Muse app to compare. Since I had several readings from my exterior wall, we dinked around with the formulation until the delta E was between 1.0 and 1.3 compared to all of my readings. The match ended up being quite good. Not perfect and not as good as some interior matches I have done with pieces of trim and painted drywall using the paint store's color measuring equipment, but it was much better than I feared once I comprehended the inherent limitations of this tool.
If you have interior paint that you want to match, you are better off taking a small piece of drywall or trim to the paint store to get a match. The paint store's spectrophotometer will give you a much better match in only one or two attempts as the paint store's equipment will give an precise formulation even it is not one of the standard colors sold at the store thereby avoiding the Color Muse paint tweaking guessing game.
Had a problem fitting the cap on the button end while in use. I reported the problem to CS and was told that they don't always fit but it was "my preference" where I wanted to keep the cap when using the device. Well, I want to keep it on the button end like it was designed for in the first place. Was told again that it would not affect the function of the device and I didn't have to put the cap there if I didn't want to. Explained one last time that I chose to use the device like it was designed for and expected it to be provided to me fully functional. Was told to send pictures to prove it was physically defective. That was enough, I was done. After admitting that the caps do not always fit, in their very first reply, now it was somehow my issue that I did not want the cap laying around and getting knocked off on the floor while I am trying to present myself professionally in a clients house.
Under a magnifying glass it was clear that the retaining ring on the button end of the device was just a tad too thick and prevented the cap from fully depressing into the groove like it does on the sensor end. There is no defect in the cap itself, just lax tolerances in inspection of the "nonessential" end. My solution was to take full ownership of this $60 color toy and correct their shoddy workmanship myself. If you have a cap that doesn't fit on one end and you are not afraid of potentially voiding the warranty on a device that costs less than dinner and a movie then I offer the following steps that solved my "issue."
I had some wet/dry sandpaper handy and I laid some 220 grit on a flat piece of glass. Being careful to keep the device perpendicular to the paper I gently pushed the button end back and forth on the paper, watching as the plastic left a visible trail and used that to judge how much material I was removing. Do this carefully and in short stages, stopping to gently wipe away the plastic dust off the device with a damp towel. DON'T use canned air or blow on it as there are fine openings into the device around the button and usb port. Try to fit it in place and grind some more as necessary. When it was almost perfect I finished it up by sanding it in small circles on some 400 grit to smooth out the rough marks from the heavier grit.
Now my cap fits fine on both ends. As a result of my inspection of this device during modification I think I will go looking for a pouch or box for this as I don't like that dust and dirt can so easily get in the button end. I will keep using it until it becomes indispensable in my work and at that point it will be worth it to invest in a real colorimeter. Until then I will class this as more of an impulse buy than a necessity. If you have $60 you don't really need then go for it and see what value it can bring to your job and when you reach its limits then spend real money and get the real thing.
