Story:
I bought this for a mITX build. My case supports normal (ATX) PSUs, however I was curious of how this little guy could perform inside my system. First thing to mention is the quality of the product, it screams high quality everywhere, from the package to the components itself. compared to Silverstone SFX PSUs, I can tell the difference quality-wise, and don't get me wrong, I do like the offering from Silverstone in the SFX market.
Installation:
In therms of installation and setup, no problems at all, all the cables necessary are included in the box and this PSU being modular makes it pretty simple to just connect the cables you will be using in your system (everything is coded to match the connectors correctly). Cable management perhaps is the only "con" I could mention, even though "modular" should equals less tangle in cable management, in this case is not that accurate. Compared to a 450w non-modular Silverstone PSU the cable management is more difficult to route between my tiny SG13 Silverstone case, the modular connectors are a little stiff, so bend them doesn't feel natural, I could even think I may broke one of the connectors if I apply too much force on them trying to route them out of the air-flow path of my case fans. The good thing is that if you are like me, needing only a couple connectors in place should leave enough room free for the case to breathe fresh air.
Performance:
Silent, works very cool, the fan doesn't even spin most of the times, so you can be sure the noise levels coming from this unit will be near to 0. Temps seems to be fine even with my case components being little cramped inside.
Playing games for around 3 hours felt natural, heat and noise remain the same as it being in Windows Desktop just idle (to be fair, the only noise was coming from the GTX 1060 cooler). I can tell this PSU can handle my system with ease and I am pretty sure once I feel the need, I will be able to apply OC to the CPU and RAM without any issue.
My setup consist in:
I5 6600k stock
Noctua NH-L9x65 CPU Cooler
EVGA Stinger MiniITX Mobo
16GB Ripjaws DDR4 3000mhz RAM
Samsung Evo 850 SSD
Zotac GTX 1060 6GB Video Card
Silverstone SG13 Case
Corsair SF450w Modular SFX PSU
Windows 10 Pro
Conclusion:
If you are in the market for a new PSU in small form factor, this is a no brainer. Due to the tiny size of SFX PSUs, makes them ideal for cases with little to none air flow, leaving more free space between the CPU Coolers and other components compared to ATX or even SFX-L PSUs.
I recommend this PSU!
Because, yeah. It's great. I've got a pretty low powered server running 24/7, and I doubt this thing's fan will EVER run, in my case. No fires or explosions yet, so that's a win. Cables are short, so make sure you're using this in a small case. My system will theoretically peak at 360 watts, so the 450 is perfect for me. If you're going for efficiency, remember not to go too close to your max wattage, BUT also don't get a 1600 for a 500 watt system- that can be inefficient as well.
Pretty cut and dry psu, definitely recommend.
Oh I also realize I'm a total hypocrite for not posting a picture of me holding this thing in my hand. It's already built so...oops?
Except for the fan spinning once on power on, i have not been able to put enough load or heat to turn it on.
Ran GPU and CPU stress tests (around 204 watts) for over an hour and fan never came on. Was only a little warm after the hour. And that could have been due to heat from CPU.
Note, i have the intake fan facing up(basically exhaust when fan isnt on) and right under a fresh air vent. Case is Silverstone Computer Case with Mesh Front Panel,Black (SG13B) with Noctua Low-Profile Quiet CPU Cooler for Intel 115x Based Retail Cooling NH-L9I CPU cooler and Noctua SSO2 Bearing Fan Retail Cooling NF-A14 iPPC-3000 PWM front fan. Running at 430 and 590 rpms right now(no low noise adapters, just set both profiles to 0% at 30C to 100% at 65C for CPU and MB temps, room is 25C/73F probably). Did not know about this power supply. With the SilverStone Technology Universal ATX to SFX Power Supply Bracket RL-PP08B adapter adding around 22mm of height, probably could have gotten a 120mm based cooler like Noctua NH-L12 Low-profile Quiet CPU Cooler with 120/90mm Dual PWM Fan , not sure.
Dislikes:
- The SATA power is using all right angle connectors, so they are very hard to position near each other and also only 4 connectors. If you only have one or two drives not an issue.
You need 2 PCIe 6pin(peripherals), 3 ATX/CPU/EFS 8pin(cpu,gpu)(not 8pin PCIe) and 1 ATX 10pin plus 1 ATX 18pin(motherboard) female connectors on the power supply side to make your own set of cables.
Last note, does not come with ATX to SFX adapter plate. Glad, since I found the Silverstone adapter that is much better design than Corsair's adapter.

Now this does fix that problem because this power supply is tiny and can give a couple inches extra space for my radiator....
There is one problem and complaint I have with this though, all the cables that come with this power supply are far too short. It makes almost all of them completely useless. I am using a standard mid size case, but the shortness is just a joke, they should at least offer a few extension cables for the cost of this unit.
I had to use extensions on most of the cables. Bit of a hassle but mostly works now. Added extra cost though having sacrifice my extension cables to do this when they could have at least added a few more inches of length and saved me a world of headaches.
Nice job corporations, guess i'll have to replenish my cable stocks i had to waste extending all the cables.
I had ordered an EVGA SFX PSU, and they were reasonable enough to include such a bracket.
My advice: skip Corsair and order an EVGA instead.
