The reason i am taking this down to 4 stars is: you can only plug this into your PC with the included cable, which is not a standard one that is easy to find in case you lose/damage the included one. This is a bummer, fortunately i am really careful with my stuff, but i dont understand how in an MSRP of $59.99 Corsair couldnt figure out how to use a micro usb port instead of the proprietary one they used. Another small thing that some people may have an issue with is that this isnt really functional when using it with a wired paired of headphones. It doesn't look "nice or cool" with wires hanging around it and there is no place to really mount the cable. For that reason i purchased a separate cheaper $10 stand that had holes to plug the ends of your headset cable (3.5mm) into so it would look neat and organized.
This stand suffers from neither of those issues. Its rock solid, doesn't move around and doesn't flex from the weight of my headset. I did not buy this to use the built in sound card, so I am not commenting on or reviewing that aspect of the device. Though Windows did recognize it immediately and switched the audio and mic devices, which I then had to switch back. So that's a good thing for people who do want to use it for that purpose.
The RGB lighting functions without the Corsair software, defaulting to a rainbow pattern. As I don't own any other Corsair devices, I don't plan on installing the software required to change the RGB. The fact that it functions without the software does tell me it has some sort of on board storage that's saving the lighting pattern, so I would assume you could install the software, change the lighting to what you want, then either keep the software from running again or uninstalling it. I may update this review if I end up doing that later. The Corsair Sail logo defaults to a basic white color, which is fine for me as I have all the lighting in my system set to white as well.
The dual USB 3.1 ports work just fine as well, so it seems the entire unit can function without the use of the Corsair software. Even the sound card does function, as I mentioned before because Windows recognized it, you just won't be able to adjust the settings or switch between Stereo and 7.1 mode without that software. It is a bit on the expensive side, especially if you don't plan on using all its features, but its quality is well worth it.
In conjunction with my rgb keyboard, mat and headphones, also all from corsair I am getting my daily fix of RGB. Hugely positive comments from anyone who visits my office. My computer tower is also drenched in RGB. Corsair, take that RGB coaster idea from Razer please!
My one area of concern involved the connection between the stand and my computer. I've read several reviews about a non-standard and proprietary connector and I was a little disappointed. I really dislike those sorts of things because of compatibility issues and difficult replacements. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the stand today and found that the connector is a standard SuperSpeed Micro USB. This type of Micro USB is standard on all the external hard drives I've used. I suspect that this cable is necessary for the USB 3.1 ports. For those who were turned off by the potential of yet another cable, fear not.
Overall, a very nice (but expensive) choice.
