Great entry mk, great price, compact, more responsive than rubber kbs, lighting would be cool
Ps sorry i did not have a banana for scale in my photo
My only gripe with it at this point would have to do with the lack of backlighting, however, I was aware that this keyboard wasn't backlit when I picked it up.
To comment further, when I had originally picked this keyboard up I had only prior experience with Cherry MX Blue switches and membrane. Reds were definitely different at first and felt weird, however, I soon got use to them and love that they click and clack just like Blues.
All in all, I'd recommend it!
The various extra function keys (both the separate ones like the volume controls as well as the Fn key-based combinations) are nice and work well. I also really like the fact that unlike the ES-87, the keyboard has not done away with the menu key.
The keyboard base looks very solid and the brushed aluminum looks great. Also, thanks to the design the keyboard is super easy to clean. Just put the brush tool on the vacuum cleaner and go over the keyboard. Because the keys are so exposed, that will get pretty much everything whereas with other keyboards cruft still collects under the keys.
Overall, the ES-87 wins but it also costs quite a bit more.
Cherry MX-Red keys are often said to be poor for typing, but I have no real complaints. I think a tactile key is nice, but these are definitely not a disadvantage for a competent typist.
As a University student, I find myself typing on this keyboard far more than I find myself using the WASD keys for playing video games. I installed O-rings under the key caps to quiet them down a bit, but that is more of a personal preference thing than a necessity. A mechanical keyboard is going to be noisy, even with the O-rings installed, typing at full speed is very audible. Not loud like an MX-Blue or buckling spring, but still pretty noisy. I would not recommend this if you are sharing a dorm room or have your desk in a shared space, but in a separate office, it's nice. I enjoy the sound.
Some mechanical keyboard enthusiasts replace their key caps with PBT caps, and Corsair has a non-standard bottom row, so that would not work with this board unless you found corsair compatible caps. I don't mind the caps that it comes with, but I do understand that PBT caps would have a nicer and more solid feel.
All in all, I enjoy this keyboard. It has a nice feel and works well for typing and gaming alike. I am sure there are nicer mechanical keyboards on the market, but at the price I paid, this one may be the most affordable one that's worthwhile to purchase.
After 2 months of usage though, I've gotten quite used to it and wish I had the same keyboard at work. It has some polling settings, which I've never seen before on a keyboard and left it at the default and haven't had any issues. I don't notice any lag or any delays, and I love the way the keys feel.
The overall quality of the keyboard is superb, it's quite heavy and just doesn't feel cheap. It does lack lighting, there's only 2 lights, which are the CAPSLOCK and WINDOWS-LOCK keys.
