Some reviews say it's not real leather. It is, you can smell it right away. It's nice and supple but quite sturdy. The color is just like in the photo and it looks like a really high quality item. The stitching is very nicely done and the snaps hold well but don't feel like you're going to have to tug them until they break to get them free.

Some commented that it's a bit long for the 10-30 kit lens, which is true but actually not if you've got it still in the "on" position. Yes I know, most of the time that you will have your camera in this case it will be turned off but if you're shuffling through a crowd and want to keep the camera protected (but still be able to take pictures fairly easily) you might button it up and leave the lens in the on (and therefore more extended) position. Taking a photo with the case still on is as simple as undoing the two side snaps and flipping the front of it out of the way.

Again, I can't emphasize enough how this looks and feels like an item that costs easily 4 times what it goes for.

Honestly, I am perplexed. Some reviewers are determined this is leather, smells like leather. Others say they were duped. I do not feel like I received a solid leather case cover....but good grief....it was less than $20. I wasn't expecting much. But, it is a well made pleather case and fits the camera nicely. The bottom will unscrew in about 2 to 3 seconds to drop out the battery if you need it. The front, or lens cover, is indeed larger to accompany the larger lens that can attach to the camera. Since I primarily purchased it for the half case to protect the bottom of the J1 and to have a little something extra to hold onto, this is not a problem for me. The cover does come with a matching strap, which is not shown in their pictures. I do have my own softer strap that I prefer, however. The inside is plush and well designed. I expect it to protect the camera nicely in the event of jostling or small drops. I think you could compare the pleather quality to that of a product from JCPenney, Walmart, KMart, etc. But, definitely not higher end. I think you will be looking at paying much more for supple leather. (As for the varying reviews, I almost thing the batches being produced have some variances, also. Otherwise, the descriptions would not be so different.)

I read the reviews, noted the minor complaints (i.e., that you have to take the whole case off to remove the battery for charging) and purchased this case. Unlike other buyers, I wasn't looking for a primary safety case. I was only looking for a more attractive and practical way to carry the camera with me both around my neck and in the diaper bag, and particulary one that would allow me to keep the larger lens on. This does that. I have the big bulky foam bag for serious travel and excursions but this is great for carrying around the museum or the zoo and does exactly what I wanted. It looks good, keeps the camera in reach and, most importantly, keeps it well protected while it is dangling about my neck or bumping around in the bag. Works as advertised and for a really good price.

UPDATE 3/28/2014: Still love this case! I am always getting compliments on it. More times than not, I have the smaller lens on and don't find this overly bulky. If you are looking for a secondary case to use on a day out instead of lugging the big, bulky protection case around and you are on the fence based upon some of the reviews, just buy it. You won't regret it.

Most of the time, I store the camera in this but when I bring it into a place, I take the massive cover part that snaps on OFF. It's just too big. I wish they sold a cover part that was shorter so I can keep it around my neck with more protection. The J1 is small. I have the 10mm lens now too so this case is really huge. Still, with the J1 being white and this beauty looking all vintage leather brown, I like it so much and I can not believe the great price under $20!

Although there are some room for the longer lens in this case, I think this is better than to have it the other way around with having the case too small. Of course, a detachable smaller piece for the case would be great as well :)

I just got it today, and it came wrapped and ready to go. I quickly slid the leather strap in replacement of the white one I got with my Nikon J1, and it feels great around my neck.

It's easy to take a quick picture without having to take off the top portion of the case, as the snap-on buttons allow the top to swivel in two different directions, allowing the viewfinder and lens room to take pictures in!

I guess the only thing that bothers me is if you only have the bottom piece of the case on the Nikon J1 with either the 10-30mm or 30-110mm lens on, the camera will tilt down off-balance and the lens will touch the surface. Which is fine, unless you place it on the floor or something.

The PU Leather feels and smells nice as well. Perfect purchase on my behalf, I believe.

My original review stated that this was not leather. It smelled weird and and didn't seem like it was, after a few weeks of use, it had broken in amazing, after the third week you could finally smell the leather and its taking extreme abuse very well. Couldn't be happier for 20 bucks. Great holder

I love this product because provide the protection that I need to have for my Nikon J1 camera. Great quality material. Excellent package and delivery.
I don't love the fact that I have to remove the bottom of this case every single time that I have to charge the battery. A little incomfortable, especially when your are traveling and you have schedule to follow.

Yes, it has a strong smell for a couple of days after you get it. I put mine outside in the sun and the smell went away. Works great for my Nikon 1 J4 with the 30-110 zoom. Nice looking too.

I am always on the run. Taking photos quick is what I need, but I also need the protection of having a case on my camera at all times. I don't trust my camera just swung over my shoulder without something on it. This is the perfect case if that is what you are looking for. You can unclip the top portion, snap away, and then clip it back on. No hands needed to hold the case while you are taking your photos. Perfect for an on the go type like myself :)

I've been using this case on my camera for months now and it rules. Its held up great and looks good. Fit is nice. The only thing I don't like is removing the case to access the battery door.
