Sorprendente !!!

First & foremost, Cotre provided excellent support to me. I exchanged at least a dozen emails with them. I always received a response within 24 hours, often in less than 12 hours, and my questions were promptly answered. I also received a replacement unit within a few days (more on this later). This level of support is rare these days.

Now for the radio itself:

Based on FCC filings, the Cotre CO06D is identical to the Gocom GD-900. It is simply marketed by a different company under a different brand name & model number (see the FCC Change of Identification Authorization for id: 2AXBB-CO06D). The Gocom CPS works with this radio - it's the CPS I use.

If you are a ham: you should be aware that the CO06D is designed primarily for the Business Radio Service. A quick tour through the marketing material confirms this - the word "professional" is everywhere & plenty of hardhats in the photos. In addition, my radio arrived pre-programmed with a collection of "dot" channels among others. That said, you will find that CO06D has some limitations that you may find objectionable: no promiscuous mode, a maximum of 16 channels per zone, radio id display only, no way to permanently assign a talkgroup to a channel via the keypad.

The radio appears very well built and has a very solid feel in the hand. All of the case openings are protected with rubber gaskets or are molded into the case itself (screws holes, clam shell, knobs, keys, etc) - and yes, I checked this myself. I don't know if it is truly watertight, but I would feel comfortable operating this radio in the rain or while fishing on the jetties.

The CPS is easy to use and easy to understand. You will have to download and install the CPS yourself, and you will have to purchase a programming cable (neither are packaged with the radio). You can use the Baofeng programming cable available at amazon for about $10. The CPS has a few bugs along with an slightly awkward feel, but it is useful and effective.

The radio uses an electret mic with a small hole just below the LCD. The mic is mounted with a rubber gasket in a molded mounting cup on the inside of the front panel. The entire cup, rear of the mic, and the associated wires are covered with a polymer sealant to prevent water from entering through the mic hole.

A common complaint with this radio is a low transmit audio level. Cotre support confirmed that the transmit audio gain can NOT be adjusted via the front panel UI, nor via the CPS. After receiving several reports of "very low" transmit audio, I expanded the size of the microphone hole hoping this would improve the level. It did not. I then tested with the mic completely exposed (case open, mic removed from the cup) and confirmed that the mic was wired correctly (no polarity reversal). This did not improve the audio level either. I contacted Cotre support and they promptly replaced my unit. Unfortunately the replacement unit suffered from the same low transmit audio.

I learned that if I climb up on the mic (about an inch away) and speak slightly louder than normal, I can eliminate complaints about low transmit audio level. My guess is that the level was set assuming that the radio would be used in noisy work environments (e.g. construction sites, machinery rooms, HVAC closets, etc) where a lower mic gain makes sense. If you're like me, you may be accustomed to amateur radio HTs and quieter environments, where you hold the radio 4 - 5 inches away and speak in a normal comfortable voice. So it's possible that I may find the mic gain is set appropriately during outdoor testing.

I have not found a suitable external speaker/mic for this radio yet. I tried a "standard" Baofeng/Kenwood mic which failed to operate properly.

I did not evaluate the number of talk groups that can be added to each receive group, but it appears to be more than 16. If you're a ham and arrange your zones, receive groups, and channels with some forethought, you can achieve behavior that closely approximates single-slot promiscuous mode. This may be more than adequate for many users.

Bottom line:

What you get, for what you pay: excellent.

I'm an amateur radio operator, my primary DMR radio is an 878uvii plus, and I still plan to buy at least one more Cotre CO06D. Cotre support has been excellent, the radio is well made, its price is aggressive, and its features are more than adequate for my use cases (primarily outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, etc - leaving my 878 well protected at home).

My two suggestions to make this product more attractive to the amateur radio community:

1. Add programmable mic gain.
2. Provide a way to select the talkgroup for a channel via the front panel UI (keypad/lcd/menu etc).

I have been using it for some time, working very well and build quality is pretty good, by far this is the best dmr under 100 dollar range (i should say 50, but there is no other dmr radio which cost under 50)
I wish thry come with dual band antenna, based on some article online, this seems a dual band radio

Consider this as a carry around radio. Programming is ok along with other import radios. The unit is very well built and controls are good. Display is adjustable and very clear.

First - low TX volume issue. turn the "mic denoiser" on and it will fix most of it. This is basically a compander function and makes a very noticeable difference.

second - you absolutely MUST have a programming cable. I dont think i could even put a freq into it without changing a setting in the software. I might be wrong about that but nonetheless. I have a baofeng-abbree pl2303 chip cable and it works. get the cable upfront if you're unsure what yours is just order one with the radio. other reviews give the other cable types that work, I forget off hand what those are.

-radio is far heavier than a baofeng. its a tank and its big. 1.5x a uv-5r.
- 16-18 line channel name. which is awesome if you're used to baofengs
-radio is simple. yes DMR is complicated but operating this radio is super easy and will work for your non-ham fam.
- analog scramble + compander - you dont hear people talk about it but this has it as does all cotre radios. if you have a tyt th-uv88, a wouxun kg-uv8d plus, qyt kt-8900, anytone 5888, these all have scramble and comapnder.
- encryption - Im too new to DMR to know whats what here but it appears to have AES256 option in the CPS software. which is top tier encryption found only on the $200-300 radios
-uses baofeng antennas. but they may need to be modified to fit the body of the radio. stock antenna seems to work well and I have no desire to change it. I like small antennas anyway.
-you can unlock this to VHF just do a search and people have posted how, Ive yet to do it.
-screen is 100x superior to regular ham radios and makes this thing far easier for a novice to use. I gave this radio to my 73 year old mother because its so much easier for her to operate and see the channel names.

Returned this radio within the return time frame window. I ordered the radio and the programming cable, as suggested. The radio came with a mini CD. I loaded and set up the program on 4 different computers and was not able to get the radio to read or write. I kept getting, "plug-in USB cable errors" on, 4 different computers. I could see the new COM port each time I plugged in the USB cable, but it would never talk.
Just sharing my experience. From this experience, I would not recommend this radio. Wasted a lot of time.
---
I returned everything in 1 box, including the program cable. I just found out that I was charged for the cable. Someone in returns did not look, so I lost the refund for the cable that was returned. Very disappointed and now lost $8 in the process... to the folks that sold the radio, "I RETURNED THE PROGRAM CABLE IN THE SAME BOX AS THE RADIO..."

Very good Quality of the walkie talkie, good range up to1.5- 2 miles in the neighborhood, and 3-5 mile on the open road or highway. It’s a great tool for the areas that cell phone can’t reach.

I have seen others with same specks going for more . I did not expect them to be so clear , so that is a plus . The battery life lasted two days until I needed to recharge but I’m using it to communicate with someone a house distance for limited interaction of maybe a minute at a time .
