I mainly got this book for the practice exam questions, and having now taken the CPH I realize that the practice exam questions in this book are not a good approximation of what to expect on the test at all -- in difficulty level, in subject matter or even in form. In fact, there is some very specific guidance of the different question formats that are used in the CPH (these are outlined on the short practice set available from the NBPHE website, [...]) such as vignettes, straight multiple choice and matching -- and these did not appear in the sample exam in the CPH Exam Quick Reference. The difficulty level was completely off, particularly in sections where the author clearly was not an expert, like Environmental Health and Social and Behavioral Sciences. For questions in these sections, there were literally pages on end where the answers to sample questions were ALL "all of the above." To be fair, the Biostatistics and Epidemiology questions were a somewhat better approximation.

I was also hoping to get more practice questions at the end of each chapter with the online companion site -- but my book had no insert with the log-in info. I complained to the publisher and they said there was nothing they could do because I purchased the book (new) from Amazon. I alerted Amazon and they sent me a new book very quickly (thanks Amazon!)... but the new book also had no insert. This leads me to believe that the publisher is not including this log-on insert for the set of books they send to Amazon -- which is a complete rip-off, since, again, this was a major motivator for me to choose this book. Looking back, I wish I had just gotten the ASPH study guide, which was far cheaper.

Regarding the content, it was fair.

This book gives you a good overview but it does not go into the depth needed to pass the CPH exam. Purchase the online ASPH guide - read the overviews for each topic, study the terms, and take the sample questions/practice tests. The questions on the study guide are similar to the ones on the CPH exam. Depending on your knowledge of the material It may take up to 2-3 months to study. You should also go over your class notes. Use the ASPH core competencies to identify your strengths/weaknesses. Know how to apply the knowledge as well - don't simply memorize the concepts. Read papers/online material to better understand the application of the concepts. It isn't an easy exam, but you can certainly ace it with the right amount of study.

Like many on here, I am also taking the CPH exam. I purchased the ASPH online study guide and saw that this book was also suggested under their links. I was not pleased to find out that even though it says comprehensive online resources available on both the book cover and under the Product Description on the Amazon website, that we cannot access that companion website without paying for it.

I emailed Customer Service through the book's publisher, Jones and Bartlett Publishers, and they said they cannot guarantee products that are not purchased from them. So I strongly encourage Amazon to update their Product Description, or work with the publisher to include an access code that would allow us to access the companion website. If no action is taken, I'm sure more negative reviews will continue.

I'm not very far into the book, but so far it's been a good enough review. I think I would get the same out of my old notes or borrowing notes from friends. They tend to use words before defining them which is annoying.

I am very disappointed that the book didn't come with an access code to the online material. Even more annoying, the online material costs extra money. The reason I got this book over the ASPH review is because it came with the book plus the bonus material online.

this is not the best review book I've had but there isn't really anything out there to study for the CPH exam. The ASPH study guide was the closest from the exam as far as questions, but I like the text of this book better.

When I registered for Comprehensive exam of MPH in Tulane, I started looking for review material to cover all core coursed in shortest possible time because I had all those credit hours going on and can't find enough time. A friend, who is doing PhD from JHSPH, advised me to buy this book for review. Even though this book is for CPH review but its equally benefitial for comprehensive exam as the pattern is same for both exams. I have not yet taken my comprehensive here (due in two weeks) but I found this book very helpful. It covers all core areas of Public Health which you need to know. So, if you are planning to take CPH, this review book is a must have.
