I just acquired a clamp meter with inrush and wanted to know what was the gain with this start kit capacitor.
Without I measured 80.5A
With the 5-2-1, I measured 74.8A.

The LRA on the unit is 73A so I'm getting closer to spec. The unit is from 2005 so hopefully it'll help to keep it longer.

Got this following an AC tuneup. My HVAC guy said my unit could benefit from it has it is 15 years old however it would be $390 to get one and install it.
I contacted a few other company and they said that was the kit to install.
I have a 3t unit, this kit is in range to do the job.
I ordered it from Amazon (can't beat the price comparing to $390 from the HVAC guy).
Installation was easy (make sure to turn off power first) and straightforward after watching some videos on YouTube.
I can't speak if it's better not worse yet as it's been barely a week but I'm looking forward to see if this will help with the electric bill.
I haven't noticed a noise different in starting my ac not it exploded so time will tell.
Make sure to read the instructions before installing. You have to put the tab of the relay and the capacitor connectors facing up or it may not work properly and last.
In the kit, you'll find a zip tie, 2 screws, I start capacitor, 1 relay, instructions.
So far, so good.

Wish I had installed years ago

Like most everyone else that came researching this product, I too was starting to having aging hvac issues. My system was becoming louder and taking a bit too long to get started. I read reviews from several websites, ALL of the reviews here on Amazon, and as many videos on YouTube as I could find. I came to the conclusion that there is a real benefit not just for systems that need a little help but newer systems as well. I followed all the instructions and had the kit installed in less than twenty minutes. When the system switched on I was amazed at how quickly it started up. Only time will tell if this was a good decision or not but right now it sure seems to perform as advertised.

Edit: I recommend also replacing your run capacitor at the same time that you install this compressor saver. Amrad makes a fantastic American made run capacitor.

5/10/2020 Update: I’ve had the 5-2-1 installed for over a year. My system started up like a champ all summer. I wonder how many more years I’ll get out of my system now.

9/25/2020 Update: Another intense Virginia summer has come and gone and my system started and ran perfectly all summer.

Smoother startup, but one caution ...

I bought two - one for my downstairs heat pump compressor and the other for my regular a/c compressor, for upstairs. I am very comfortable with electrical and it only took me about 15 minutes to install each one.

Interestingly, the circuit diagrams for both compressor units show phantom wiring for an optional start kit (i.e. at EXTRA cost) ... just one "5-2-1" relay and a capacitor! A/C manufacturers no longer supply these as standard as it's both a way to cut their cost (without you being able to notice) and a way to wear your units out faster, thus needing replacement!

The units appear to start more smoothly, but I have yet to see if they actually save on electricity.

Just one caution if buying and installing it yourself ... the 5-2-1 company's website Q and A states that the warranty will only be honored if the device is installed by a licensed HVAC technician. I understand the need to protect themselves, but just understand that unless you use a HVAC guy to install, there is no warranty!

My Compressor Outlasted The Kit!

I installed this kit back in 2012 on my 22 year old Carrier Tech 2000. The compressor was making a lot of noise starting up and seemed to be on its last leg. The lights in my house dimmed every time it started up. When I installed the kit, my compressor started instantly, no noise and no dimming lights!

After 6 years, my now 28 year old unit again started making a lot of noise on startup and the dimming lights returned. I figured after 6 years the capacitor was shot. I bought a second kit and after replacing my original 521, my compressor again started like new and the lights in my house shined bright.

I can’t say enough about this compressor saver! The fact that my compressor outlived the original kit speaks volumes. Worth every penny, even twice over!

I bought a Goodman 2.5 Ton central air conditioner 2 months ago. When the weather got hot it ran great for a few days but suddenly wouldn’t start one day making a very loud hum. After it tripped out on overload a few times trying to start it finally started running normally again on its own. I talked to a HVAC tech and he said this issue can happen because most new condenser units no longer come with a start capacitor to make the units cheaper. They rely on the run capacitor and a big in-rush of current to start. He recommended to install this kit to help give the compressor that extra kick to get started. I am a electrician so it was easy for me to install. In the condenser control panel red and black go on the contactor load side (to compressor) and yellow on the “herm” terminal on the existing run capacitor. All the terminals to push the new wires onto existed which made the install even faster. The condenser wiring diagram even showed this start capacitor/relay as an optional item. Since installing this kit I haven’t had an issues with the compressor starting anymore. Also I don’t see my lights flicker anymore when the A/C starts.
