I bought this for a quick cheap buy for a 3 hour bus trip, brought it home and looked up the 3 reviews here, thought "Great, it's going to be a piece of crap".
But, I figured I'd give it a shot anyway.

I loaded it up with some photos, videos, and songs... then I charged it away. The following day on my trip, for some reason it was only halfway charged. I also could not find my videos or photos but the music played fine. The half a charge lasted me the 3 hour trip there. I'd say total, it lasted for about 3 and a half hours.

So, here I thought "Great! These bad reviews were right!" but obviously, I gave it a decent star so there has to be good right? Right!

The Issue: Charging the player

Clarification: Yes, you have to charge the player for 10 hours the first time. Yes, you have to have it plugged directly into the USB from the provided USB chord. Both of these are specified in the few instructions they give you. For me, neither of these things were an issue but I did have problems the first week or so with the charge not really working right.

The Resolution: When charging the player, it must be turned on. What I realized was that I left the player plugged in, charging, and still turned on. When it finished charging, I would just leave it. This ended up killing the battery because it was no longer charging and it was turned on. Yes, I think this is kind of silly. I mean, if it's plugged in should it not keep charging? But, that's the key. Charge it 10 hours the first time. Then 4 hours the next time and just make sure you unplug it and turn it off. I have yet to have a battery issue since this discovery.

Note* I don't think the battery lasts 16 hours as specified though.

Unfortunately, all you've heard about this is true. I just bought it on a whim for $25 just to see if it was better than Sylvania's PoS I bought from the same retailer.

Anyhow, it's very hard to get working. The fact is you have to charge it for 10 hours before you can even do anything with it although I managed to get a few songs on it before it crapped out. Then after charging I continued to have issues till I realized it wanted to be "directly" connected. You can't use this if you use an extension usb cord to connect it. It has to be connected with it's cord "directly" to the computer to work right and charge / add files. If you are using a USB router hub or something similar, put the cord directly in a USB connection on the Laptop / desktop PC or this player won't work right.

Also, once you go into any of the "modes" (picture, music, etc..) you have to turn it off to get it to turn on again and give you the main menus. Main Menu disappears during play and the player will only access the menu for the particular area you are in (pictures, music etc...) so you'll have to turn it off to get to the main menu again.

I tried picture mode but it's pretty bad. It's very light and the images come out so tiny that unless it's very distinct it won't be pretty to look at. Viewing is maybe Postage stamp size if even that big for image quality and somewhat blurry.

For a layman, this is not a good gift. If you don't mind a bit of playing with it to get it to work, it's ok. If you want it to work right off the bat w/o any problems... get something easier like an IPod or other name brand. Over all I've had it a day and I know it works but it's a heck of a job to get it to work right unless you're really good at figuring stuff out.

Received Craig MP3 player as a gift to use when walking for exercise. Used about 5 times during the first month. Then I had trouble turning it on and off. It seems as if the on/off switch is broken. If I can get it to turn on, it won't turn off. I have to let it play until it is no longer charged. When I contacted Craig Eletronics via e-mail I encountered a customer service rep who didn't get it. After 4 e-mails she advised me to send it to them with a $15 check and they would replace it. Why do I have to pay for it, it's defective! karen

Don't have this exact player but the 2GB MP4. Battery never charged even after I tried several times with button in "on" position. Got response from customer service that battery was defective and that either take back to CVS, or send in to Craig with $15 dollars if within 90 day warranty or $30 if out of warranty.Since I had bought at Xmas and I made mistake of not opening for about 4 months(was supposed to be backup to my Ipod 512k Shuffle). none of above options make sense to me. Have read many problems with this and other models even if battery charges. Soooo....don't even take a chance for the price. This has been the 2nd Craig product I have been burned by. The other was the analog/digital TV converter. It worked just past the warranty
period and "crapped out". talk about planned obsolescence. : 0
Never again!! Made mistake of not getting online and reading about the model number. Sigh! I always research before I buy. Amazon reviews as well as FixYa site tends to be pretty accurate.
Have to admit that I did like the quality of sound and equalizer when able to play from USB port on my laptop. Liked the colorful LCD screen 2.
