I will upload a photo of a racoon design that I did in grayscale coloring with these pencils. While it doesn't show the diversity of colors available in this set as I used mostly grays, browns, and white, what I particularly liked about these pencils for this project is that I had to blend and layer a considerable amount. These pencils were great for this purpose.
Only reason this set doesn't get 5 stars is because open-stock (individual pencils) go for $2.23 and up!!! Considering I find the Faber Polychromos pencils a tad better than the Pablo overall, has put a bad taste in my mouth. If it wasn't for some of the beautiful colors in this set like the blues, olives and supporting flesh tones to my Faber Polychromos, I would have returned this set because my wallet and I, are going to cry, when I have to replace colors that I really like and use a lot of. I hope Faber or Lyra makes some of my favorite Pablo colors!
FYI .. at $223.00 a set ... the set is fairly priced considering the price of open stock. If you are going to use Color Pencils a lot, there for constantly buy open stock, go with the Polychromos instead, (I consider them, the best color pencils overall as do a lot of people). I would than buy a few open-stock of these Pablo pencils colors you really like and use, at an on-line art store. at $223.00 a set, you can buy the Polychromos set plus 12-15 individual Pablo pencils for a color palette of 132-135 colored pencils!
You can visit the Caran d'Ache website for a downloadable color chart for the Pablo pencils, so you can choose colors individually.
I enjoy the intricate coloring books, and like having a broad selection of colors for my palette and shading. This set offers that, and they layer well together.
Update: I think I have been "spoiled" by the Polychromos, as I tried the Pablos again, and they really aren't bad pencils. They are deeply saturated with pigment and when you work at them, the results are quite good. But I'm not used to working so hard to get good results. With
the Polychromos, they look good without trying! I have added a star because I think I made a hasty decision. However, my review still
stands. They are VERY hard and difficult to blend.
Update again! (1-19-2017) I reassessed the Pablo pencils. They aren't as hard as I originally felt. It must have been one of my "bad" days, where I felt weaker than usual! They are still harder than I would like and I have to use more effort to produce the same depth of color as my set of Luminance, but they are very nice pencils. I can use them with no problem and I'm very happy about this, as for me, they were a huge investment. I have been trying some very inexpensive brands of pencils and I now notice that these are MUCH better. I have blended them and made it work. I have also used the Prismacolor blender with them and that also works! As I mentioned previously, I am old (69) and I truly believe that is the root of my problem with them. They need hands with a little more strength.
