Works with Win 10 for Sysex dump and Ipad

As other's have said, plug the EMU to opposite connectors on your midi keyboard, in to out, out to in, and you should be good to go.

EMU to Win 10. My Roland D 70 lost it's internal memory, so I had to reload the system through a midi dump. I connected the Roland to my Win 10 USB, even using a USB extension cable (which isn't a good idea). I used BomeSendSx on the PC to send a large midi dump file the the Roland. The Win 10 PC and BomeSendSX app picked up the EMU right away.

EMU to Ipad. I also attached the Roland/EMU to an Ipad and the midi was picked up perfectly in my Ipad app.

So great device. Couldn't ask for anything more.

My thots on midi sysex dumps. Sysex dumps are temperamental and people have had problems with getting good transfers forever. Here are my suggestions for getting a good transfer. If the EMU is showing up on your Sysex app, then presume it's not the EMU that is the problem, but rather the settings in your midi device or your Sysex app. These settings are critical. I've attached pics of my notes that I followed to get a good sysex dump. Along with following all the steps laid out in my notes (including slowing the transfer rate to the slowest setting possible), the final thing that was the break thru for me, was bypassing the Roland's internal midi transfer routine, and putting the Roland into "Manual" mode to receive a midi dump on channel 17. I outline all the steps in the attached pics of my notes. Also be sure to have the latest version of Win 10, if that's your operating system so you have all the latest drivers.

A must have for Electronic Music Makers

This product was recommended by Synthesia, and rightfully so. I have a 20+ year old Casio Keyboard with MIDI ports on the back of it and it's like unlocking features I didn't know the keyboard had.

While the sound output may different because of the software compatiblity between Synthesia and a keyboard that may have been released before some new MIDI standard was passed, the interactions are responsive and correct.

This is a must-have accessory that should have come with my keyboard, but I guess the 90s were still full of people who didn't think USB would become a venerable standard. (I've got some stuff that I've seen on Lazy Game Reviews on YouTube that brings up some fond memories of some old peripherals. I don't think LGR is going to be making a video about this device anytime soon unless he wants to make one praising how good it is.)

Just remember that the Out Plug goes in the In Port and the In Plug goes in the Out Port.

Works for basic midi messages. Sysex isn't as consistent.

Update: The sysex implementation is inconsistent. Some devices can receive sysex from this while others can't - I have not yet been able to determine if it's a transmission speed issue or simply a phantom power issue (some devices won't receive sysex if there's no phantom power, even if they don't need the phantom power). It doesn't provide phantom power, so you can't program the midi-solutions event processor directly from this adapter. It seems to receive sysex from synths just fine. It can send/receive CC messages just fine. Disappointing that the sysex isn't working with my old K2000, but it seems to work with my other gear.

1. I couldn't get it to work. Spent hours messing with my MIDI keyboard and computer settings. Read keyboard and software manuals and watched YouTube videos. Did everything right. Still doesn't work.
2. It's not built with durability in mind. When I unplugged the USB from the computer after trying to use it just once, the plug came apart.

Order arrived by US MAIL to my PO BOX in 4 days in a nicely padded envelope. Buy this excellent interface and save yourself at least (...) by not buying the m-audio or cakewalk versions. Windows (and yes even Vista and Windows 7(I'm running the beta Windows 7 Enterprise 65 bit version and also 32 bit Vista home professional) will recognize your USB EMU XMidi right away. You can go to emu and download drivers and a pdf of the user manual. REMEMBER, out is IN and IN is out....that's right, hook the labeled blue labeled "IN" connector to your "Midi Out" connection. Think of it this way, the blue connector is labeled correctly, it's an "IN"put for midi data. Other than that, NO or very little latency (take that cakewalk!!) Yes, I replaced a lost cakewalk usb midi interface that I had previosuly purchased as part of the Cakewalk Usb home studio package (I think still (...)). The software is good, but the cable just isn't as good as quality as this one is. Buy it, and save yourself money and headaches!! FYI, here is the link to the manual and drivers -(...) While you are there, you should download the FREE Proteus VX!

Great MIDI interface

I got this to replace some cheap MIDI interface a guy had thrown in with a keyboard I bought from him a while ago. It was clunky, and slow, and unreliable. The EMU is everything that wasn't.

It's plug and play, no drivers or anything needed, and the latency was definitely cut down from my last interface. That's really all there is to say about it, it works. Just remember that the IN cable goes into the OUT port on your device, and vice versa.

Recently, I've noticed that sometimes my keyboard will have a latency of several seconds, but it's remedied if I unplug and replug this in, as well as restarting my DAW. However, this has only started happening once I switched to Ableton 9 from 8, so I'm just gonna chalk that one up to 9 acting funky. No complaints about the EMU.

Before buying this, I made the mistake of buying a cheap no-name midi cable, and had nothing but grief.

This cable has worked flawlessly under Windows 7 x64, where a cheaper cable I bought didn't work under Windows 7, Vista, or XP. EMU provides drivers for this cable on their website. Altough its just a cable, I'm really impressed by the build quality of it. The LEDs to indicated data transmission flash subtly, the usb plug is well built and stable and the entie cable is attractive and stylish.

Don't waste your time on cheaper alternatives - pay a little bit more for a quality solution.
