The lye came delivered to me professionally sealed, in a convenient canister. The lye flakes appeared fresh, there was no caking and no static electricity inside the canister. I observed all the safety routines, and this lye made great soap for me. I even used the residue (I made hot processed soap in my crock pot) to make soft soap for my bathroom!!!!! My recipe is below .... I'm so excited on how great this came out and can't wait to do my next batch! Thank you Due Expressions LLC.
Recipe - made 6 nice sized bars
Coconut Oil-76 3 oz.
Olive Oil 3 oz.
Castor Oil (regular) 1.25 oz.
Castor Oil (Jamaican) 2.75 oz.
Shea Butter 6 oz.
Palm Oil 1 oz.
Aloe Vera Juice/
(my substitute for water) 6.46 oz.
RED CROWN High Test Lye 2.092 oz.
Cocoa Butter 1 tbsp.
Vitamin E 1 tsp.
Oatmeal 1 ½ tbsp.
UPDATE: On 3-19-2014, same canister of lye (almost gone though), I'm still using this product to make great soap! I made Patchouli Lime Soap w/Crushed Rosemary and here's my recipe (using crock pot method):
Palm Oil 6 oz.
Coconut Oil-76 7 oz.
Almond Oil 3 oz.
Jojoba Oil 1.8 oz.
Cocoa Butter 6 oz.
Shea Butter 2.5 oz.
Grapefruit Extract .362 oz
Aloe Vera Juice/
(my substitute for water) 9.994 oz.
RED CROWN High Test Lye 3.246 oz.
Crushed Rosemary 1 tbsp.
Nettle Leaf Powder (for green color)
Main = Patchouli and Lime EOs
Small Amount = Lavender, Rose, Jasmine, Lilac, Lemon
After 48 hours, I stamped the bars with, "Handmade Soap," a new technique I'm still working on. I've got a while still for the bars to fully cure, but they look so nice I wanted to share (oops -- apparently I cannot add another photo to this review, but they look so nice!). Thank you Due Expressions LLC.
1.92oz castor oil -- 6%
8oz coconut oil (virgin) -- 25%
22.08oz olive oil -- 69%
4.41oz NaOH lye (Red Crown High Test)
10.56oz distilled water (I used 10.58)
This recipe is superfatted at 5%; yields: 47oz.
I added some dried nettle (one teabag full) for the speckled texture, letting it soften first in bit of the olive oil I was planning to use in the recipe anyway, and also some essential oil.
Wear goggles. Ensure adequate ventilation. Cover up in case of splashes (one of the tips I read is that instead of an apron or something that has to be flipped up over your head, a labcoat or other covering that unbuttons is even better because you just unbutton it and shrug it down your shoulders).
