I've seen the TV history documentries about WWII and the struggles of the average GI in that conflict. I don't remember any of those shows talking about the planning that went into prosecuting the war. Ike's book is a window into the minds of the political and military leaders responsible for planning a long-range strategy aimed at ending the war from the beginning. Ike clearly explains the cooperation that was achieved between allies under him as supreme commander in Europe. He gives credit to the commanders under him for their accomplishments. He explains internal details about some incidents that got over-baked in the press such as Patton's famous slapping incident involoving two hospitalized GIs in Sicily.
I learned that Operation Overlord was approved as early as 1942 and was always the main objective of all preliminary operations in north Africa and the Mediteranian to deny the Nazis access to mid-eastern oil and to establish lines of communication and supply to Europe through southern France and Italy in order to cover ground closer to Germany. Airfields were captured in order to advance deeper into Europe where aircraft could operate within their fuel range.
Ike's skillful political sensitivities of war-time and eventual post-war leadership in France are discussed. Not only is this a great fresh look at WWII military history, but it is also a great book about leadership that anyone could benefit from.

Dwight Eisenhower is one of my heroes. A man from modest beginnings reaching the highest position in our Society. The most qualified man who became president. The book is very readable and is modeled on Grant's memoirs not self serving or boastful.
