I purchased my CST/Berger 57-LM30 leveling laser level package from Amazon on 7/20/08 and started using it the last of Sept. I was bragging to everybody that would listen about this amazing tool. My neighbor mentioned he had bought one and it stopped working and was in for repair, I should have listened. After no more than 20 hours, the cap on top that rotates stopped turning and all the lights started flashing. I walked over to my neighbor to show him and he said it is what his did. But he had his back and had saved the return box and I could use it to send mine back. I called the 800# and they gave me a return number. In talking to the rep. I learned this was not uncommon and was not reassured it would not happen again. My neighbor told me. I could use his so I proceeded with my work, for about 3 hours. The next day when I set it up, again, the top would not rotate and the lights flashed. He had used his for about 15 hours since receiving it and we are both very upset. Mine is in for repair. I have no confidence it will continue to work when I get it back and this is something they know about and continue to sell the instrument.CST Berger LaserMark LM30 Series Wizard Rotary Laser Kit - 57-LM30PKG

I'm a "do-it-yourselfer," not a professional. Have used this to design drainage system (swales, ditches, pipes) four 4 acre property. Also, in building house, used it to shoot level points from which to measure when installing siding. Everything has worked well for me ... probably 40+ hours of total operational time; maybe more than that.
Like the various "rotation" options. At first did not realize the value. When using the measuring stick and beeping sensor, the fast rotation worked great and allowed us to move all around property. However, when marking a wall in broad daylight the fast rotation was practically invisible. But you could use the "spot non-rotating" setting or "limited rotation" setting to shoot the beam along a level horizontal you wanted on the wall, and then mark wherever you wanted. Haven't tried using it in vertical orientation.

Con: wish it had a way to raise / lower the head slightly. Perhaps it is expensive to make such. Would be nice to be able to re-position at another time in the SAME orientation as previously. Ideal: rough set up with leg height adjustment and level. Then fine tune raise or lower +/- an inch to exact. Confirm level.
Actual: no way to "fine tune" raise/lower; have to do it all with the legs; in which each time you adjust, it changes the level.
Maybe a "self - leveling" one would solve this problem. If so, if you, like me, might like to re-create a position frequently, might consider self-leveling models.

The beeping receiver that fastens to the elevation ruler digs holes into the paint or the metal ruler and roughens it when tightening it to hold a position.

I bought this laser level kit from Home Depot. New out of the box, I found the carrying case broken - smashed in on one side. CST/berger happily replaced this for me, stating they've replaced many of these carrying cases. My new carrying case came quickly and they didn't even request the broken one back. The new case was the same exact case, no design improvements. After loading up the new case, I closed the lid and successfully latched one of the clips. The other clip broke off in my hand. Well, whatever, I thought. I'm too busy now to deal with this, I'll just live with one clip. A few weeks later after using it on a job site, I packed all components back in the case. Well one of chincy items inside was misaligned and when I closed the lid, the two hinges on the bottom of the case broke their plastic housing. Awesome. So now I have a case that is totally useless as far as carrying this entire kit. Still too busy to deal with this, the whole kit sat in my office for about a month, in the broken case. A couple months passed before I needed it again. When I did scoop it up to bring along one day, oops, I grabbed the handle and the whole kit fell out the bottom of the hingeless case. In a hurry, I packed the necessary components in a bag, including an extra set of batteries I always kept in the case, and drove off to the job site an hour and half away. Photos, sketches, measurements and lastly, the difference in elevations between buildings. Grab my handy dandy laser level because I'm a big girl now and the top doesn't spin and I'm staring at 6 flashing lights. Well, good thing I brought those extra batteries! Eh, not so much. They didn't change the situation.Read more ›

Have had this transit for a couple of years, with maybe 20-25 hours total usage time. I am careful in handling these types of tools (I have a David White tilting transit that is still flawless after 32 years!) and have treated this in like manor. Well, today, when trying to get a job done, it did as the others have said - stopped rotating & all of the lights began to flash. Nothing worked. Will probably use it for fill somewhere. Although not a top of the line unit, I fully expected more time than this before failure. Save your money - buy something more reliable!
