Have had this computer for less than a week but I already love it. As a college student studying microbiology, being able to open multiple tabs and download a large number of files for reviewing, note taking, and studying is critical, which is why i love this thing.

It's super light so I can carry it to class, the lab, and back to my dorm to study easily. It has a super long battery life so I don't have to worry about being gone all day and it works great even with over five or six tabs open! All the things I need are online (google docs, slides, and sheets are great) and the processing speed is impressive compared to my old mac. Even video quality, which I wasn't expecting much from, is pretty great and can handle everything I've thrown at it so far.

My only complaints are that the sound is a bit tinny when it's high but it's not bad and it can get decently loud if needed. The charging cord is pretty short compared to my mac charger, so finding outlets is a bit of a challenge. And if I'm in a large lecture hall where everyone is using the wifi or if the wifi isn't particularly strong, my Chromebook has a little trouble connecting. It's also not as customizable, and the track pad is a bit rough with a click and drag function for dragging files, but not hard to get used to.

Overall, for the price especially, I think this is a terrific purchase and do not regret giving up my Mac for this. It's so convenient and it does everything I need better than my old laptop.

Definitely Worth Checking Out

This is a very respectable Chromebook, but the reason I give it 5 rather than 4 stars is the price. I bought one to try out for use in a before- and after-school program. It seems solidly built, is fast, and is supposed to be intended for the trauma of elementary school use. I maintain, repair, and help buy computers at two non-profits. I've used an assortment of Chromebooks, and the only criticism I have of this model is that the display gets a "just okay" rating compared to the much more expensive one I use (and the displays on the more expensive JTL's). Schools like Chromebooks because most are tougher than PC's, they can do everything but run Windows software, and they are much, much easier to maintain because they don't have the same virus and malware exposure as PC's. I plan to be buying a bunch for our after-school program. (Note: 2 gigs of RAM works well for Chromebooks because, like Apples, they have an amazingly better operating system than Windows).

A Solid Performing Bargain--But With Two Caveats

This is a solid mid-performing Chromebook at a bargain price. It has a good keyboard and touchpad, zippy web-surfing, and very good video streaming. Its has two main weaknesses. The tinny sounding speakers are ok for listening to narration but obnoxious with music.There is, however, and audio jack receptacle for earbuds or headphones. The screen has a small optimal viewing angle and the anti-glare treatment notably reduces its sharpness. That, combined with my old eyes, has made me set the display zoom to 125%, which generally works fine, but occasionally the last entries of a drop-down menu are hidden below the bottom of the screen, and when I am initiating or replying to an email in my Verizon account, I can see only three lines of the text that I am entering because Verizon's wasteful use of vertical spacing in the Chrome web browser. This is not a problem when using my gmail account, but it might be with some other email systems that have not be optimized for the Chrome browser.

Be clear: This is not a PC or Mac laptop; it runs on the Chrome operating system, which has several advantages and disadvantages that have been explained in articles on the web.

Don't Purchase - Known battery issues and it WILL happen to you!

DON'T PURCHASE! These are known to have severe battery problems. The battery will not be able to recharge and then you will either have to always use the power cord or will have to replace the battery itself. Look up the information about this Chromebook! They are physically tough as nails but the screen is ridiculously louse for contrast. If you try and highlight something to copy, you can barely see there is a highlight. These are only temporary machines. I know, the battery issue and the contrast happened to mine. Buy some other brand. These are poorly made and you are wasting your money. I could buy a block of steel that would be tough as nails and get more use out of it than this piece of crap.

Solid Chromebook. Exterior is as nice as more expensive Chromebooks. Other than that, it's typical Chromebook experience. My son has used it HARD for school and pleasure for several months, and it's been perfect. Only quibble is that the speakers are pretty awful, but we use headphones or external Bluetooth speakers if watching video/music (or connect to TV via HDMI cable) -- so it doesn't matter.
