I was debating between setting up ASA 5505 or going with CUJO. Of course CUJO is more cost-effective and easier to set up, not to mention the Machine Learning capability (I was instantly drawn to this selling point).
It's true what you read on the review. I had to call customer support to get the DHCP mode to work. I think the trick here for the CUJO folks is automating the DHCP set up. If they can do that, they are looking at solid product that anybody can use.
As for the form factor, I would prefer it to be flat, rectangular shape (easier to place on top of my many other... flat devices it sits on).
Also, I would prefer black over white, because white plastic always finds a way to get discolored into feint yellow.

One thing I might add, there was a horrible power surge at my house recently. And of course, my CUJO AC adaptor appeared compromised (it was plugged in next to another AC adaptor that actually melted from the power surge). I contacted CUJO and asked for replacement adaptor, as generic adaptors didn't work. They were kind enough to send me a replacement adaptor. It took a few days, but the company actually followed through on their promise. This is a great attribute for a start-up company.

I knew I wanted a hardware firewall to protect my home network as I have a smart home. Counting computers/phones/ipad/kindle/thermostat/cameras/lights etc there are more than 25 items on my network.

I looked at several items and this one appears to be the best in terms of what it does and the critical app (on iphone) that controls it. Bitdfender Box has had some apparent issues with their app and Cujo's app appears to work well.

BEFORE I purchased I called Cujo and spoke with a tech support person (Iggy M) who was great. He really answered all my questions and helped put my mind at ease that this device was not difficult to set up and would not "mess up" my router or my network.

I ordered the device on a Friday, received it the next day and Iggy spent about 30 minutes on the phone with me helping me configure device and MAKING SURE it was working.

SO FAR, SO GOOD. I had one attempted hack picked up 3 days ago which was blocked and I was notified.

Amazon now has the device for $23 less than when I bought it. WIsh I had ordered it now.

I can't believe the number of good reviews for this product.

Let me be clear - this product does what it says it does. Usually. And that should frighten you.

Here's what used to happen:

- You install CUJO. It then STEALS the network ID of every device on your home network. It pretends to be those devices. That way, all their data goes into the CUJO.
- Because you have a lot of data (most home networks do), CUJO ignores it. It samples a few kinds of headers, and passes the rest through. The unit isn't powerful enough, nor their cloud service big enough, to process the vast majority of your data. That's not because they built a bad cloud service. That's because your home network has terabytes and terabytes of data running all the time, and nobody has that much storage.

Why was this bad?

BECAUSE IT STEALS THE NETWORK ID OF YOUR DEVICES. Over a wi-fi connection. This is like if your spouse walks up to you and says "hi, Dave!" and some stranger jumps up and says "I'M DAVE. TALK TO ME." and she says "so I was thinking about getting chinese for dinner" and the stranger says to you "Dave... she wants chinese for dinner". And then picks up his cell phone and says "chinese food order, wong's chinese inn, 42 mulberry drive". You then say "Well Mary..." and the stranger jumps up and says "I'M MARY. TALK TO ME." and you say "nah, I want pizza" and the stranger says "Mary... Dave wants pizza." and then picks up his cell phone and says "pizza order, domino's on 12th". That's how this works. I can't POSSIBLY imagine that it would get confusing for you. Or for Mary. Nevermind when you decide to retire to the bedroom. "Alert - purchase from Victoria's Secret..."

How it works now:

- You plug it in, and then you log into your router and do a complicated (for home users) setup change to make the Cujo into your DHCP server. Then it sets itself as the default gateway, allowing it to inspect headers.

THIS IS NOT AS BAD. It's still like putting a very intrusive/closed firewall in place, and monkeys with port forwarding, but is less terrible than before. I added a star for this. It's still hard to set up - they claim they're "working to automate it" but that is unlikely to ever occur without other types of hacking, since most routers are a closed architecture.

Some other thoughts:

1. It introduces lag. They talk about Speedtest reports and whatnot, but the reality is that every time your signal turns into wifi latency is introduced. This is not a huge problem normally, but if you are running from your XBox->Router->Cujo->Router->Internet that introduces two extra hops at a few milliseconds apiece. Not enough for the average user to notice, but power gamers are going to complain.

2. Port forwarding (needed for a lot of uPnP services, including gaming) is going to be tricky. Not impossible, and I believe they are working diligently on it, but don't expect your XBox to have an Open NAT rating out of the box.

3. The processor in this unit is an Octeon III dual-core. That's decent for the limited packet inspection they are doing. Their claim that it's crazy-powerful is a little misleading. It's plenty powerful for what they are doing on 99% of home networks. Which is the intent. It's roughly equivalent to the 2016 version of home-networking firewalls from SonicWall or the like.

4. The company is disingenuous. In an attempt to make their product seem "simple", they were obfuscating a substantial security risk. They were doing something called "ARP Table Poisoning", which is a really bad thing to do on any network. If you plugged a CUJO in at work, the security team would descend on your cube and smash it with hammers. If they didn't just fire you on the spot. Do you really want a device like that running at home? I sure don't.

4a. Since they realized ARP was a bad way to do this, they are now using DHCP. Sadly, this is nowhere near as simple. Gone is the magic "just put it on your kitchen table and it works like magic". Instead you have to figure out how to log into your router, make a network change (which your ISP will tell you is bad but who listens to them? I'm not actually being sarcastic here, they want you to use them for DNS/DHCP because they like using your web browsing for advertising metrics!) and then reboot everything a few times. Not the end of the world, but no longer simple enough for Grandma to use.

5. Last but not least, I specifically did NOT back these guys on their Indiegogo or other crowdfunding campaigns... because I thought it was a super bad idea. But it turns out that they weren't honoring those commitments in a timely manner, either. They have shipped all their pre-orders at this point, they claim...

I've adjusted this product to a 3-star rating based on their feedback. Pending independent verification thereof.

I mostly work from home and and ordered CUJO as an added layer of protection for the highly sensitive information I store in devices on my home network. At first, CUJO was not able to identify all my devices but after speaking with someone at their Customer Service it seems to be working well. I have not noticed any drop in my Internet speed, it’s something I'am watching closely. The device itself was easy to set up and looks great in my home. So far, so good.

I rarely write reviews, but have to for this. I opened my CUJO box around 830pm yesterday and had spent about 5 minutes starting to set it up. Before I even knew that my setup was wrong, my phone rang (that's why they ask for your number when you sign up for an account). A customer service representative had already spotted an issue and then spent the next hour walking me thru fixing it. And once it was set up, I received an email from the CEO thanking me and providing his email and phone number for feedback. He responded to my request for Alexa and IFTTT integration within hours. So, no, this wasn't the easiest to get set up in my case, but you can't beat such proactive service. Plus in the last 18 hours the CUJO has already blocked 3 threats!
