From the Author
"How dare you speak of me like that?"
Lucan stopped and turned at the sound of Veronique's furious accusation. She strode out of the forest, eyed red-rimmed and burning with fury.
His pulse quickened. What had she heard?
"Veronique, what are you doing here?" He spoke in the calmest voice he could muster.
Danton and Mattias mumbled in low tones behind Lucan. Mattias muttered something like, Looks like somebody's in trouble.
She strode toward Lucan with quick steps that made the fabric of her dark emerald dress rustle. "You think this was all a joke?" She waved her hand in a circular motion. "Some fun and games until you got tired and decided to go in search of a new toy?"
"No, of course not." He opened his arms wide, turning his palms up.
"What now--you're bragging to your brothers of your latest conquest?" She spat.
"Before you go off to find a new one."
"You misunderstand," Lucan attempted to placate her. "Come now, Veronique, and let's talk." That was another problem. What could he say that he hadn't said several times already?
"I've heard enough of your words. Lies." She pointed at his chest.
"It's not like that at all," Danton added from behind Lucan.
"Back off!" She snapped at Danton. She turned back to Lucan and curled her fingers in. "I can silence your lies."
"Hold up," Mattias countered with a raise of his hand.
Gray smoke funneled from her fingers, followed by fiery sparks. It quickly swelled and swirled out like a charcoal tornado etched with streaks of fire. She hurled the growing mass at Lucan before he could even protest or try to block the magic.

When Lucan met Veronique, the witch had wanted to take their relationship in a direction that he was unwilling to go, so he broke up with her. She is then furious with the gargoyle shifter, and curses him plus his two brothers for their actions, trapping them in their stone form from which they cannot easily change. A way to possibly make their situation some better is offered to all three men, but they wonder if accepting the deal will help or still leave them with only more tormented days ahead.
Since I have not read any of the previously released books in this series, all the information learned was new and definitely interesting. Having gargoyle shifters as the main focus in this prequel kept me entertained, as they are seldom the lead characters in a story. Lucan, Danton, and Mattias have their own traits, and after being cursed, their abilities are even more unique. They are from France, and end up in America working at Vamps, a club where the supernatural can come and enjoy a good time. Each of the shifters gets their own story along with numerous other paranormal beings, and I am eager to find out what happens to those connected in some way to this unusual establishment. This story introduces the French gargoyle shifter brothers, Lucan, Danton and Mattias who are happily living with their clan. Lucan starts seeing a witch, who believes their relationship is more than just the fling Lucan believed it to be. When she comes across the brothers discussing her and Lucan, she believes they are speaking disrespectfully of her and she curses them with a black spell that locks them in their stone forms and clouds their memories of her.
As the brothers adapt to their cursed lives, they find that when they see someone in danger, they are released from their stone forms for 24 hours.
Are they to be cursed forever? Or will the brothers be able to find a way to break the curse?
This is an intriguing introduction to the gargoyle brothers, Michel their vampire boss and VAMPS the underground alternative goth nightclub. Ms. Carlisle has done a good job of worldbuilding in such a short book. I do not usually like cliffhangers, but since I read this book after the book that gives us Danton’s story, I was not upset and did not have to wait.
Once you start reading this series, you are going to be hooked!
Lisa Carlisle is a Paranormal, Romantic Suspense. A well-written short in the Underground Encounters series. This is the prequel to the gargoyle's shifter stories. Here we Meet the three gargoyle shifters who guard at Vamps. Danton, Lucan and Mattias and why a vengeful witch locks them in stone and clouds their memories. Even though their stories can be read as standalones I do recommend you read this first. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review
