I am using these cord Splitters to plug into Wi-Fi plugs to control the lighting in my reptile terrariums and my aquariums. I take one Outlet, I plug this into it and I use the splitter for lights only.
I have been using the Wi-Fi plugs for about 6 months. I only added the Splitters about a month-and-a-half ago and it seems to be going well. Nothing feels hot. Nothing smells weird. Nothing has blown a fuse yet.
Everything I have is Alexa compatible and set to turn on automatically at a set time in the morning and turn off every night. The only time there has been an issue with this there was a problem with the internet connection following an outage in my immediate area.
Everything seems rather safe and secure. But again... I am not an electrician.
UPDATE: I tossed the Alexa smart switch things. They were completely unreliable. If Alexa can't connect.... neither can your switches and your lights get left off all day. No bueno when your tanks are relying on them for daytime heat.
I would not use these cords for appliances, portable heaters or heavy current-draw application. They are just right for low current devices such as LED lights, electronics with "wall wart" power supplies, and perhaps a couple of computers.
The electrical prongs are not copper but rather a chrome (or silver colored metal) plated metal, but the receptacles appear to have copper contacts within. Plug and receptacle dimensions are very precise and solid. The molded outer case has strain relief rings cast into the unit.
The plastic of these splitters is somewhat stiff. It would not be a surprise to see them split if flexed many times, especially in a very cold climate. In my case, the cords will hang or lay in place for a long time without movement, so they should be just fine.
Excellent value for price paid, and very useful for our current wall-wart world. I'm happy that I ordered four of these to battle the rise of the wall warts. They will probably last until we no longer need wired power supplies.
Dimensions: The entire cable is 18.6 inches long. From the tip of the lead prongs to the base of the splitter, the lead cable is 8 inches long.
LIFETIME WARRANTY from Cable Matters, too. It's a Massachusetts-based company that has been around since 2009.
I bought an Amazon Echo Show (gen 2) and it included a free Philip Hue smart light bulb. This one light bulb started me down a long road to home automation using the Amazon Echo devices. Today, I now have 11 smart light bulbs (all Philip Hue, 2 smart plugs (Amazon and Kasa), and a smart power strip.
The power strip (Kasa) not only allows every Echo device to control each plug on the strip, but it also keeps track of the power usage for each socket on the strip. You can see the current drain and hours the socket has been in use by something. The Kasa application provides you real time data, today total, 7 days, and 30 days.
Presently, I'm using the strip to watch my Dell Precision T7500 workstation (socket 1), all my monitors (socket 2), and my accessories (e.g. external drives, video capture, usb hubs, etc). Originally, I was using sockets 2, 3, and 4 (of 6 sockets in total) for three of my monitors. The individual usage by the monitors didn't really justify taking up 3 sockets, as there are other devices (PS3, TiVo, networking (modem, router, switch, etc), etc) I should also be monitoring.
How I'm using this Y splitter
I wanted to combine all the monitors on to one single socket and thus track them together. This wonderful power cord Y splitter does a great job at allowing me to track my monitors and do it as a group (without taking up three sockets or using a three socket group).
I can't really say much about this splitter other than it is doing its job without any issues. How can one expect more from their power cord splitter than for it to do its job successfully.
