Just finished trying to use these cables today to connect a Tivo, Fire TV, Blur-ray player & an Apple TV. I couldn't get one of the cables to click in place for the Tivo. Another cable connected to Apple TV to the Access Point had horrible download connection speeds of 2-4 Mbps per second. When I switched back to one of my older cables the connection speed was around 200 mbps which I expected. The connection speed between the Fire TV & access point was slightly better (15 mbps) but not what I expected. At this point I don't trust these cables and have ordered other cables from another Amazon provider. Also trying to remove the cables from the connected devices was time consuming & a pain. I never had cables so difficult to remove.
First time I have ordered an item from Amazon that was a horrible disappointment. I'm not returning this product, just throwing it away. I wasted too much time on a product that should have been more reliable.
Update: Cable Matters did contact me offering a replacement at no cost indicating the product I received was probably defective. I receive the replacements & they do appear to fit better into devices I tried. I haven't tested new cables completely since I had already replace the previous cables in my devices. I still won't recommend this product but I give kudos to the company Cable Matters for being proactive & responsive to customer complaints.
Original: The clip doesn't always bend down enough to remove cable from port. The clip plastic is angled up far too much and stiff. I have never had a problem with cables until these. I had to crush the clip area with pliers and apply considerable force to remove the cable. After removing it I could see that the edges of the clip were bent back where they were pulled out of the port. There is also a large hump of plastic under the clip that could be preventing it from being pressed as well.
Luckily it was in my switch and not on my motherboard! I am considering throwing the rest out so they don't get stuck in other more expensive devices.
Let me say that this would be a 5 star product if not for a manufacturing defect! 5x 5ft Cat-6 cables for $10 is a great deal, but I only received 4 functional cables! The black one I received seems to have had a molding problem with the black plastic around one of the connectors. This makes it impossible to insert. You can see this my pictures. By the time I noticed this I had already spent 20 minutes behind my TV cabinet and had installed 3. At this point I it isn’t worth the $2 (10/5=2) to me to uninstall the other 3 and send it all back. However, that doesn’t change the fact that I’m disappointed with the quality control on this product.
That being said, here are my other thoughts on the cables:
The main attraction of these cables for me was the fact that they are cheap, come in a variety of colors, and are Cat-6. The main drawback is that the simple plastic tab over the locking lever is a flimsy design and better disigns exist (but cost significantly more). Since I don’t plan on moving these around (disconnecting and reconnecting) the durability of the locking lever was not a huge concern for me.
As for price, I bought 5x 5ft Cat-6 cables for $9.99. Seeing as a single equivalent AmazonBasics cable is $5.49, I’m considering this a good deal.
When considering Cat-5 vs Cat-5e vs Cat-6 the real answer is that Cat-5 is slow and dated while Cat-6 is unnecessary unless you are doing very long runs (100+ feet). Therefore, it may sees like Cat-5e is the practical and economical right answer today. I went with Cat-6 because it is slightly more future-proof, but more importantly: when it is this cheap why not? In fact, when I searched for 5 foot Cat-5e cables, none showed up. The funny thing is that Cat-5e only saves you money for long runs, at which point you should be using Cat-6 to reduce crosstalk and preserve speed anyway! Long story short, Cat-5e may seem like the right answer (and use them if you have them) but when buying new, just get Cat-6.
I purchased 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, and 14 foot cables and among the labeling on the 4 and 7 and foot cables is: "ENHANCED 550MHZ" but the 3, 5, 10, and 14 foot cables don't have that stamping. Are these cables good/mislabeled/550MHZ?
I received another email from Cable Matters and they sent me pictures and indicated they aren't stamping 550MHZ on their cables anymore. Unfortunately, I accidently deleted the email I received from them or I would give you the quote they gave me.
Anyway, I like their cables and they say they are 550MHz, so I'm upgrading my review. I know that when I purchase cables in a store and they aren't marked 550Mz I don't buy them, so I thinks it's a bad marketing decision to remove 550MHz from the labeling, but it's not my company.
