I have a bundle of pet electrons. One day, they asked me, "Daddy, are other electrons happier than we are? They have gold-plated diamond-encrusted unicorn-hair carbon fiber sheathed Apple-branded cables that cost $160 for a two foot cable."

I said, "No, my sons, they are not. For digital transmission channels do not degrade gradually with a decrease in signal quality. Those that perpetrate this evil upon the general population know that they are ignorant of the fact that any cable meeting the basic electrical interface specification, having mediocre shielding and sufficient SNR, will deliver the same performance as its unobtainum-coated counterpart."

The electrons rejoiced, and hurriedly danced their way from my Macbook to my iMac display.

I have a late 2009 iMac 27", and a 2012 Macbook Pro (MBP). I wanted to connect the MBP to the iMac and use the iMac as a target display in conjunction with my MBP (dual screen action). This cable is perfect for just that! I've connected, and now enjoy dual screens, extending my workspace in the process. Be careful to check your systems' inputs (on both devices) to ensure that you get the right cable ... I confirmed this particular cable at one of a couple sites online that I easily found, and a few days later ... magic!

Executive summary: this cable finally got target display mode working for me.

Geeky Details: Apple allows iMacs to be used as external monitors using something it calls Target Display Mode. I tried driving video on a 2009 iMac using a 2011 and 2013 MacBook Pro. I could not get an official Apple thunderbolt cable to work, despite a lot of claims that the TB cable is backwards compatible with DisplayPort cables.

So I bought this. It worked without issue.

Unrelated gotchas: Apple keeps jacking up the function keys. COMMAND-F2 works for my 2011 and 2013 model MBPs. But you may need to hold down the FN key as well.

I recently purchased a 2014 Macbook Pro with Thunderbolt 2. I used this cable to connect it to my Mid 2010 iMac 27" to use it as a display.

Apple's website says that you can connect a Thunderbolt laptop to a MiniDisplay Port iMac with a Mini Display Port cable. If you go to the Apple store and ask a "Genius'" they will tell you that it can't be done.

A Thunderbolt cable will not work for this project. Only a Mini Display Port cable will work.

Result-
All the power of the latest MacBookPro, with all of the great display of a 27" iMac.

Perfect.

This cable works very well for connecting a mid 2010 MacBook Pro to a late 2009 iMac 27" to use the iMac in target display mode. This allows you to have a second external monitor for the laptop. This does not work in reverse. In my set up, audio is conveyed through the Mini DisplayPort cable, but a separate USB cable is necessary for audio to be transmitted if the MacBook Pro was built prior to mid 2010. Great cable at a lower cost than other brands!

Just the right length to connect two 27" iMacs together. Using my old iMac as a second monitor -- plugged cable in and everything works great. BTW, use command-F2 to switch between monitor and computer on old iMac as needed.

I have a MacBook that I connect to a monitor when I'm using it at my desk. My monitor came with a black DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable which worked fine, but I wanted a white cable to match my desk and not stand out as much. Since the monitor also has a Mini DisplayPort connection this cable worked great for me. It's just the right length to go from my laptop to around the back of the monitor and connect without a ton of extra cable coiled up on the desk.

Unfortunately, like the vast majority of DisplayPort cables on the market, these are not DisplayPort certified by VESA. I purchased these cables in the spring of 2015 to attach a Dell P2715Q 4K display to a iMac 5K Retina as a secondary display. Originally, the cable worked well with no issues. After about a year, I began to have issues with Dell intermittently going black for about split second before restoring. I had read about issues with Dell displays an assumed it was the monitor that was at fault.

As time went on the intermittent screen blackout grew more frequent and based on further research I found that the cable may have been the problem. My search for a resolution led me to the official DisplayPort Webpage on selecting cables. It turns out that VESA certifies cables for compatibility with the DisplayPort spec and only DisplayPort-certified cables may carry the DP symbol. These cables do not have the DP symbol and are not on the short list of DisplayPort-certified cables; there are only 23. On top of that only two of the certified cables can be used with Macs as most of the certified cables do not have at least one mini-DisplayPort connector.

Both of the Mac-compatible cables are from Accell and I recently purchased the Accell UltraAV Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable to replace the CableMatters cable. The new cable seems to removed the screen blackout issue. I find it sad that the vast majority of DisplayPort cables available are not built to the standard required to properly handle UltraHD/4K computer displays.
